  Chapter One

When James left the small cottage he’d rented at the edge Glens Falls, it was the middle of the night. It had taken several months to set up the VIM Corp and to find a place that would be suitable for their needs.

But they had found the perfect place for the organization. A property near Oswego, New York on the top of the cliff overlooking Lake Ontario. The main house had two wings, Bastian (Priest) and Sawyer took one wing and Theo (Bane) and Sarah got the other wing.

There was a guest house behind the main house and James settled in there just fine. It didn’t take them long to build the underground storage and computer lab as they knew exactly how they wanted it. It stood between the two wings and was connected to all three homes by way of a secret tunnel. They even rigged their own hidden cell tower for communications purposes.

When Bastian proposed a new enterprise to Theo, Theo had taken a moment to think about it as any good businessman would but after they talked more about the purpose of their business really was, Theo was in all the way. Both men had taken a chance to do over their lives and they both could put everything they had learned over the years to good use with this new project.

Bastian and Theo had more than enough money to put together and get whatever they needed to work with, so they didn’t spare any expense. They went top of the line as always. This first project was personal to Theo but Bastian agreed to it, so he was here to set the stage for the takedown.

Their first order of business was dealing with Sarah’s stepfamily. Oden Connors and his remaining three sons. For almost thirteen years, they had been hunting Sarah and her mother Ellen for the murder of Ellen’s husband, Jack. If anyone needed to be taken down, this family certainly did. The Connors’ secrets were about to be revealed in living color and James couldn’t help but smile as he would take part in all the fun.

From what Sarah had told them the killing had been justified as she’d had no choice. The fact Ellen was also mother to Pappy Masterson didn’t hurt and Theo wasn’t going to let anyone hurt his Sarah, the two women were safe for now, but something had to be done to stop the Connor family. Research had shown that Oden Connors was a real bastard and had raised his four sons to be just like him.

At the moment, he was the city comptroller of Saratoga Springs which meant other than the mayor, he was the most powerful man in that city. He’d thought his secrets were still secret but the last few years he hadn’t cared who knew he was the one with all the power and that made him a dangerous man. Dangerous and very stupid. Stupid, because he thought he held all the power and nothing and no one could touch him.

James had done his research, digging into the man’s past hadn’t been all that hard, he’d seen the awards and all the glory Oden Connors had achieved over the years. Oden and his three remaining sons has stood tall and proud for the press. Noah, his second oldest son had become the city attorney, taking over after Jack lost his life. Clayton was second to the Chief of police, soon to step up and take the Chief’s place when the older man retired in two years. And then there was Jeremy, who was entering the political area for Assemblyman to represent Saratoga Springs in the New York government. He thought he was headed for the Governor’s seat eventually.

But every man’s got secrets he wouldn’t want anyone else knowing and these four men needed to be knocked down a peg or two. The truth of what happened to Sarah and her mother needed to be told.

James had a thread or three to be pulled before he would be ready for the real campaign of teardown began. The more he found on the Connor family the more he despised them. This would be the first step.

Twenty minutes later, he parked his car in the shadows. Dressed in black, he grabbed his small bag and using the same shadows. He made his way to the courthouse. He’d found the building’s layout and security markers already, so he knew exactly where he was going, once he got inside the building.

Checking his watch, he noted the time. One a.m. Slipping around the back, he entered through a window into the men’s room. He’d visited the building yesterday and opened the window himself. Taping the lock mechanism so it wouldn’t latch, he closed it again, so no one would notice it wasn’t closed all the way. Now he opened it and let himself in.

James knew where the cameras where and it was easy enough to avoid them as he made his way to the second floor. His footsteps were quick and quiet. His first stop was the courtroom. Pausing behind the bench, he slipped a microphone under the desk. Then he slipped into Noah’s office. Hiding three more listening devices in places no one would think to look for them, he slipped out of Noah’s room and down the hall to the Mayor’s suite of offices.

He saw a light on in Oden’s office, so he slipped into the Mayor’s office and began placing the listening devices.

When he’d gotten a hold of the renovated plans for the city hall and courthouse, James had noted the changes in the original plans for the hundred year old building. In the original plans, there had been a secret passage between the Mayor’s office and the Comptroller’s office that had not been blocked off or destroyed. James looked for the passageway and eventually found it. As he slipped into the passage, he could hear voices talking in Oden’s office. He crept closer and listened for a moment.

Then he took note of a small vent that led directly into Oden’s office, probably the source of where the voices were coming from. He crept closer. Now he could hear what was being said a whole lot clearer.

“Your brother is going to make his run for the Governor’s office in two years. We have to find the bitch before then. We can spin out the story of how she killed Jack and prosecute her for his murder to get our foot in the door.”

“But Dad, you know damn well what got Jack killed,” another voice countered.

“Yeah, I know what got him killed but a man has a right to have a little on the side and you know it. I taught you boys that. The old lady should have just left him alone and just let him have it. Why don’t women understand that? A man has needs over and above the wedding vows. She should have been happy he gave her his name and helped her raise her bastard kids as long as he did. The Connors name means something in this town and it always will.”

James shook his head at the old man’s words. He really was a bastard. It will be a rare treat to bring this mother fucker down. James left a tag above the door and turned to move down to the basement.

He knew Oden had a vault down there for some reason and James wondered what kind of secrets the old man was hiding in the basement. He’d seen the plans for an addition maybe seventeen years ago and the initials on those plans were Oden’s himself. That alone made James curious about what he’d been doing down there. He had to have something to hide. The route he was taking was an escape route the founders built in when they’d constructed the original courthouse over a hundred years ago. It led to the basement and then to door that would lead them to the grove of trees beside the lake. The tunnel had been put in place in case of riots on the courthouse.

As James made his way down the worn steps, he paused before he pushed open the door. There was a narrow beam of light under the door which told him there could be someone on the other side.

He slid the door open barely an inch but heard no sound from the other side. Pushing it open a bit further, he still didn’t hear anything. Peeking around the corner of the panel, he looked around the room. Nothing was moving anywhere so he stepped out. Closing the door behind him, he searched the room for a reason for the light to be on but found no one el
se there.

This was the file room. Row upon row of tall file cabinets and bookshelf after bookshelf holding evidence boxes was all he could see as he began searching the entire room. The room itself was huge, taking up most of the entire floor on the building.

He paused at one point as he thought he heard a footstep but when he didn’t hear it again, he moved on. Then as he was about to step out of the shadows, he saw a shadow moving ahead of him.

James stopped and crouched down. Retracing his steps, he went around the corner of the filing cabinets and looked down the long row.

  That’s when he saw her.

He saw her back first as she had been turned away from him.

James gasped as he saw her beautiful ass. It was rounded and had some meat to it which was something he appreciated. Women today strived to be too skinny in his opinion. Flat chested and flat butted and he never cared for that. He liked a woman who might not ever wear high fashion but was ok with an extra ten pounds or so but this woman had an ass that he knew he could fall in love with. He wished she would turn around, so he could see the rest of her luscious body.

Then he looked up and saw her hair ...he almost groaned. It was the color of chocolate, dark chocolate and it was presently tied up in a messy bun on top of her head. It hung down to the small of her back and he couldn’t help but wonder what it would look like free falling. For a moment, he dreamed it was a thick shadow covering her shoulder and the whole of her back and ass. It looked thick and full and would cover them both like a blanket.

James licked his lips as he took in the rest of her body. Her legs were long and he judged her to be around five foot nine inches tall and that was without her shoes on. He chuckled silently as he noticed she didn’t even have shoes on at the moment.

It was at that moment he heard the faint echo of footsteps coming down the hall. He couldn’t afford to get caught now, but he didn’t want to leave his beauty alone to face whoever was coming toward them either. He sneaked up behind her and was about to reach around her to cup his hand over her mouth when she turned and finally saw him standing here.

Her grey eyes widened and she was about to scream when he laid his hand over her mouth. Leaning close to her ear he told her, “Someone is coming. Where is the light switch? We need to hide.”
