  "No guts, no glory, General."

  "Chameleon is an apocalypse."

  "Were you warned about the Thoreau or the Aquila? I mean, was there extortion involved or was it simply sabotage?"

  Hooker was becoming frustrated. He said sternly, "You can't use any of this, young man, because none of it can be proven. The Thoreau lies in four hundred feet of Arctic sea. The Aquila's back on the drawing board."

  "He's not going to stop, you know," O'Hara said. "He's got a good thing going. Give me a deposition to the effect that you suspect Chameleon was responsible for just one of these accidents, and it will lend credence to the story. It would be a start. Get it out in the open. This guy feeds on secrecy."

  "Mr. O'Hara, do you know who Chameleon is? Where he lives, where he operates from? Anything about him at all?"

  "Is he the same Chameleon who was on the list of war criminals in 1945?" O'Hara asked.

  Hooker tapped the ash out of his pipe and tamped down the remaining tobacco.

  "The man you refer to was killed at Hiroshima," he said. "His name was removed from the list in 1950."

  "Do you know who he really was?"

  "His name was Asieda. His identity was one of the most closely guarded secrets of the war. His specialty was espionage and he was accountable only to Tojo himself. He trained all the Japanese agents."

  "Ironic, isn't it?"

  "What?"

  "That the Chameleon we're looking for and the war criminal should have the same code name."

  "If there's an irony, it's that this fortress was once his headquarters. He trained his agents in these very buildings. And God knows what atrocities were committed in the three floors of dungeons below us. That's how I found out about the place. I came here with the Occupation Forces in 1945. But there was nothing here. All the records had been destroyed. In fact, there's no record anywhere of Chameleon's wartime activities. As far as the Army's concerned, he never existed. It's a closed book."

  "Well, I think Chameleon's here in Japan, no matter who he is. And if he's here, I can find him."

  Hooker stood up, a tall and intimidating presence, his back as straight as the day he graduated from West Point. He stuck out his hand. "Good day, Mr. O'Hara. We'll talk about depositions when you have more than suspicions and theories. Quite frankly, I think your guts are bigger than your brains. But I still wish you luck."

  "One more thing," O'Hara said as the general led him toward the door. "Do you know anything about a big oil strike called Midas?"

  The old man stood at the door with his back to O'Hara. Fury blazed in his eyes as O'Hara asked the question. The pacemaker began to clatter again. He coughed, to cover the telltale rattle of his man-altered heart.

  "'Midas.' you say? An oil field." He turned back to O'Hara once he had regained his composure. "Never heard of it."

  "Perhaps the biggest in the world."

  Hooker chuckled. "And where would this be?"

  "I don't know."

  "Nor do I, sir, and oil is my business. Mr. O'Hara, I admire your imagination. But I think it's a bit far-fetched to think there is an oil field of the size you suggest and nobody knows about it."

  "I know about it."

  "Fine—then why don't you go find it. I'm afraid you'll have to excuse me now. It's time for my nap."

  AFTER GARVEY HAD USHERED O'Hara out of Dragon's Nest, he returned to Hooker's office. The old man was sitting behind his desk, his face the color of clay, the pacemaker hammering in his chest.

  Tick,tick,tick,tick,tick,tick ...

  "Take it easy, sir. I was monitoring the room, I heard it all."

  "Did you hear him ask about Midas?" Hooker croaked.

  Garvey nodded. "We'll just have to change our plans a little. "

  "How did he get all this information!" the old man roared suddenly. Blood flooded his face and the color changed to bright red.

  "He's good, General. As good as they come. It was a calculated risk."

  "Then we need a new goddamn calculator."

  "We'll have him out in a couple of hours."

  "And what about Chameleon?"

  "General, we're that close to him," Garvey said. He held up a thumb and a forefinger, an inch apart.

  "We've been that close to him for too long," Hooker said. He stood up and walked to a dark corner of the room, standing with his hands clenched behind his back, his tall frame outlined by the grow lights in the hothouse behind him. "I should have been President instead of that son of a bitch Eisenhower," he went on. "I should have been a lot of things that I wasn't, thanks to that ... that albatross around my neck. Damn it, man, damn it."

  He fell silent, and the faulty metronome in his chest finally began to slow down.

  "Kill them both," he said, and the venom seemed to linger on his lips like spit. "Kill them both tonight."

  Fog whisked through the train station, urged by a chilly breeze. At one end of the station, a tall Caucasian sat smoking a Gitane. There was a phone booth next to him and when it rang the first time he ignored it. It rang only once. Then a few seconds later it started again. The second time he stood up and answered it.

  "Higashiyama station," he said in a soft Gaelic accent.

  "Excuse me, I must have the wrong number."

  "Whom did you want?"

  "The Italian gentleman."

  "And the name?"

  "Spettro."

  "Good evening, Mr. Quill."

  "Is your phone clean?"

  "Public booth at the train station."

  "Excellent. There is a change in plans."

  "All right."

  "O'Hara has become a problem. He's gone much further than we thought possible. And in the wrong direction. It is important that he be terminated immediately. Is he covered?"

  "He's due here in three minutes."

  "Do it as quickly as feasible, using your customary élan."

  "How about the others?"

  "Get this done first. Everything else is scrubbed."

  "Affirmative."

  "Sorry old man, you've done A-1. The man's smarter than we thought. It's a question of priorities."

  "I understand."

  "Let me know as soon as possible."

  "Of course. Komban wa."

  "Komban wa."

  Tony Falmouth hung up the phone and sat back down to wait for the train.

  O'Hara first noticed the woman when she got on the train at the Tofuki-ji station on the outskirts of Kyoto. He noticed her again as he got up to leave the train, three stops later, at the Higashiyama station. He saw her reflection in the window, staring at him from the other side of the car. The doors opened and he hurried out, eager to get back to the house and discuss the Hooker meeting with Kimura.

  The woman moved out behind him, scurried around other passengers and shuffled up beside him. "Please, follow me. I must talk to you," she whispered and hurried on.

  O'Hara was preoccupied by the woman and paid little attention to the other passengers in the station. Tony Falmouth was sitting at the far end of the platform. He got up, walking quickly after O'Hara, side-stepping pools of street light.

  O'Hara followed her through the marketplace, past the fish stalls, ignoring the vendors who shouted at him and shook eel and octopus in his face, to the edge of Maruyama Park. She was a tallish woman for an Oriental, and wore the gown and obi and the chalk-painted face and blood-red lips of a geisha. A jade hairpin protruded from the bun at the back of her head. It was dark, and fog drifted out of the park and swirled down into the market.

  "It is dangerous for me to be here," she whispered. "Please, stand with your back to me. The bus will come soon. When it comes, please get on it and go a stop or two before you get off."

  O'Hara hesitated for a moment. A dark street, fog, and he was standing with his back to her. Not smart. He stood very still, listening for sounds of movement from her. At first he heard only her breathing and then there was something else. It was not a sound as much as a feelin
g. He felt almost dizzy with excitement, and although he could not see the woman, he felt drawn to her, as if there were an electric current flowing between them.

  He turned and looked up the street at the lights shimmering in the fog and the headlights of the bus, pinpoint halos in the distance.

  "What do you want?" he asked.

  "Was it not you who asked for information at the Kabuki-za in Tokyo?"

  He hesitated again. The pull was so strong that he almost turned around. Fog swirled around them like flux.

  "Yes," he said finally.

  She spoke in a whisper. "You seek the one known as Chameleon?"

  "Yes."

  "Why?"

  "To talk."

  "Talk? Hah! You must kill him."

  He wanted to turn again. His nerves were humming. He felt strangely in tune with her, but it was a feeling he could not interpret. He thought back to the previous night when he was doing his exercises and the presence of Chameleon had seemed overwhelming. Now he felt it again. It was as if the woman was marked with Chameleon's scent.

  "I am not an assassin," he said.

  "You will understand when you meet him."

  "When will that be?"

  She leaned closer. "Chameleon is here."

  Now he felt almost elevated. His blood surged through his veins, and fuses of fire streaked down his arms and legs. He could almost reach out and touch the danger in the air but, oddly, he felt no immediate threat.

  "You mean here in Japan?"

  "In Kyoto."

  "Where in Kyoto?"

  "I have written the address—a house in the Shiga prefecture—on this piece of paper. He will return tonight at nine. And he will be alone."

  "How do you know this?"

  "I know. The way of it is not important. He will be there."

  The bus lights swept over them.

  "Why are you doing this?"

  There was a pause. "Because I am a prisoner and I want to be free."

  "A prisoner?"

  "Yes. Here, take the paper, put it in your pocket. Quickly, he has spies everywhere."

  Without turning, O'Hara said, "I must know ... how did you know I was looking for Chameleon?"

  The bus pulled up at the curb and stopped.

  "Please, do not betray me," she said. "Go now. Nine o'clock. Do not be late."

  There was no time left.

  O'Hara jumped aboard the bus and heard the doors swish shut behind him.

  A HUNDRED FEET AWAY, among the trees in the park, Tony Falmouth watched O'Hara board the bus. He twisted, from his ear, the small speaker attached to his long-range parabolic mike. He had heard every word perfectly. He made an instant decision to follow the woman and drop O'Hara for the moment. It would be no problem to pick up O'Hara's trail. But this woman held the key, he felt it. His pulse began to trip. He was close. The small listening device telescoped into a thin accordion-like rod. He put it in his pocket, and jogging from tree to tree, started to follow her.

  He followed her away from the market, along the edge of sprawling Maruyama Park. She skirted the heart of the city and shuffled into a small suburban section, down through myriad quiet, high-fenced walkways that sheltered homes from which sequestered sounds segued as he passed from house to house: a baby crying, a radio playing elevator music, another soft rock, two women laughing softly, a man singing opera in pigeon Italian, a Coke TV commercial in Japanese. Lanterns swung idly overhead, moved by the gentle breeze, and cast Halloween shadows on the fences.

  She was easy to follow; there were few people on the streets, and except for the muffled sounds from the houses, it was so quiet it was almost funereal. He could hear her sandals clopping on the cobblestones a block or so ahead of him.

  Then she did the unexpected. She cut back to the main street and entered a small restaurant on Nijo-dori Street near the Hotel Fujita. Might she be a waitress? Or perhaps the manager? He did not want to lose her. She had given O'Hara an address, and Falmouth wanted that address.

  He waited a few minutes and followed her in. It was not a fancy place, but it was serene and cool and very dark. It was so dark that it took him a moment to spot her, although the restaurant was almost empty. She was sitting alone near the back. The wall panels were open and there was a moss garden in the rear with a goldfish pond near the window. She was watching the enormous gold and black carp appraising the bottom for food. Falmouth walked to her table.

  "Excuse me," he said. "Do you speak English?"

  She shook her head.

  Falmouth quickly switched to Japanese. "I am a visitor here," he said. "I have always heard Kyoto is the most beautiful city in the world. Then I saw you and I forgot Kyoto. I realize this is quite improper, to approach you this way, but there is a Zen phrase which says, 'Take time to enjoy the garden, you may pass it only once.' I ... uh, I knew I probably would never see you again, so I followed you from the market. Please forgive my—"

  She put her hand to his lips and silenced him. "I am not offended," she said in a low voice he could hardly hear. "I have lived in America. I understand Western ways."

  She turned away and looked back at the fish.

  So far, so good, Falmouth thought. Now for the big move. He played the flustered swain, sophisticated but with a touch of anxiety. "My name is John Willoughby. I'm from London. I really am taken with you. I could lie, of course, and tell you I am lonely and want some company. But the fact is, I would like to be with you. May I buy you dinner?"

  She chuckled softly and looked back over her shoulder at him. The jade handle of her hairpin glowed green against the jet-black bun of hair, and he could see her eyes glittering in the dim light as she whispered, "Yes, John Willoughby from London, you may."

  Kimura was away from the house when O'Hara returned, but Sammi was in the garden meditating. O'Hara waited for him to finish.

  "I need to talk to Tokenrui-san," he said. "When will he be back?"

  Sammi shrugged. "You know him, he moves with the spirit."

  "An apt observation," Kimura said. They turned and saw the old man standing in the doorway. "And what is it that is so urgent, Kazuo?"

  "I'll take a powder," Sammi said.

  "It's okay, this concerns us all," said O'Hara.

  "You seem sad," Kimura said.

  "I need your help, Tokenrui-san. But in asking, I do not wish to offend you. You are as my father."

  "I know that, Kazuo. And I can see from the trouble on your face that it concerns you deeply, asking me this. I understand it is something you must do. So ...?"

  "So—you knew Chameleon, didn't you, Tokenrui-san?"

  Kimura pondered the question for a few moments. "The world is full of Chameleons," he said finally.

  "Not the Chameleon I'm talking about. I know you trained the war chiefs of the Imperial Army in the Way of the Secret Warrior, before and during the war. Chameleon was head of a special branch of the secret service accountable only to Tojo himself. He had to be higaru-dashi."

  "That is a logical deduction. I am astounded no one has made it before this."

  "Nobody cared before now."

  "And what is different about now?"

  "I care now. And a lot of innocent people have died because of this man. A lot more will die."

  "You are sure it is the same Chameleon?"

  "I'm not sure at all. But I think you know the answer. Tokenrui-san, is Chameleon still alive?"

  Kimura looked straight into O'Hara's eyes. He shook his head. "No. The man you speak of as Chameleon is dead."

  "But you did train him. He knew the Way of the Secret Warrior."

  Kimura hesitated a moment and then nodded. "He is dead now. I can see no violation of confidence by telling you that."

  "How long has he been dead?"

  "The record says Yamuchi Asieda died in the holocaust at Hiroshima."

  "I'm not interested in the records. Forget the damn records."

  "I cannot do that, Kazuo. Nothing will be gained by ch
anging things as they exist."

  . "I'm not interested in exposing some second-rate war criminal, I—"

  "Wait. Before you go on: Yamuchi, the man you know as Chameleon, was loved by many people. He was not a war criminal to us, he was a man who sacrificed much for his country. To my knowledge, he committed no acts of atrocity. He trained the kancho and he directed them. There was none better. One reason he was so good is that people trusted him. He had a great empathy for people, that is why they were attracted to him. It is why he was number one. He was also very clever, a fly too fast for the spider's web."

  "He must have done something. The government spent five years verifying his death."

  "And why do you think they spent such time and money?"

  "They must have wanted him real bad."

  "They?"

  "The Army, the CID, whoever ..."

  "Whoever, you say. One person, perhaps?"

  O'Hara thought for a moment. "Yes, I suppose one person with enough clout."

  "Ah, clout, the magic word ..."

  Clout, thought O'Hara. Enough clout to place a name on the list of war criminals.

  "Like a general maybe?" O'Hara said.

  "Ah, you begin to look beyond the obvious. Not 'they,' not some faceless organization. Him. One man."

  "Hooker was military governor here for six years," O'Hara said. "From 1945 to 1951."

  "Yes," Kimura said. "With a passionate hatred of Chameleon."

  "Why?"

  "An old wound. They were deadly enemies, remember."

  "The war was over, Tokenrui-san, a lot of enemies were forgiven."

  "Not all, however."

  "But what did he do to Hooker, to kindle that kind of hatred?"

  The old man pondered the question for a very long time, then said, "Perhaps he was frustrated because he could not identify Chameleon. There were no records. And no one ever betrayed the secret of his identity."
