“If you took Alma and ran—”
“You can’t imagine the power they have,” Henry said. “Not just the most obvious way you would think, either. They’re smart. They have vast fortunes. Thousands of servants around the world. They have their own private armies.”
“Surely they have weaknesses,” Callie said.
“They have access to magics the world hasn’t seen in hundreds of years,” Henry said. “There’s no place I can go where they won’t eventually follow.”
I mulled that over. “We’ll help you. Won’t we?”
Callie opened her mouth, closed it, then said, “The Lord has a plan for all of us. We’ve come this far together…”
I shook my head. “We only have a few weeks to get ready. I guess we better eat while we can. Never miss an opportunity, right, Cicolluis?”
“I’m not Cicolluis,” Henry said. “I’ll never be that person again. I’m just Henry Hastings.” He smiled at me. “Thank you. Both of you.”
“It’s what we do,” I said. “Besides, I’m going to need all my energy when Callie gives me Bible lessons.”
“Really?” Callie said.
Henry burst out laughing, and for a moment the mood lightened. “It sounds like we have the beginning of a plan.”
We went back to our breakfast, putting aside our problems for the moment, but the food just wasn’t as delicious as it had been moments before.
