Trusting Will (The Camerons of Tide's Way #3)
Page 24
He drifted a bit, letting his mind wander through memories of making love with her. Showing off the new house he wanted to share with her. Teasing her about the dumb reality show she liked to watch on TV. And the delight on her face when she walked into her apartment that first night he’d fixed supper for her. What had grown between them wasn’t just about Sam, and he’d known it once the drugs had been reduced, and he could think straight again.
Of course Bree would very naturally feel gratitude that he’d managed to get her son out of a dangerous situation without getting him hurt, but that didn’t explain her sleeping at his bedside through the night. There had been tears in her eyes that first time he’d spoken to her aloud. He might have been loopy on drugs, but he hadn’t missed the tears or the way she’d touched his face.
A jumble of voices interrupted his rambling thoughts. Or maybe he’d nodded off again. He opened his eyes to find his room filled with people. Bree sat on the edge of his bed, holding his hand. Her hair was pinned up with flowers in it, and she was wearing a very pretty dress, one he hadn’t seen before. Pale yellow and silky. Very flattering. He reached out to touch it. “Hey, Bree,” he greeted her softly.
“Hey, yourself.” She bent to kiss him and slid to her feet beside the bed.
He took in the rest of the room.
Sam sat with his blue cast propped up on a stool playing a game on someone’s smart phone. Ben leaned against the windowsill with his long legs crossed at the ankles. And there was a priest. A priest? What was that about? And Zoe? Will turned back to Bree in confusion.
“What’s going on?”
“A wedding is going on. If you’ll still have me.”
Epilogue
WILL LEANED BACK against the comfortably upholstered chaise that occupied a good portion of the little balcony where he and Bree had first made love. He was waiting for her to get home from a late evening at work and thinking about life. His incredibly satisfying life.
This house that he’d stumbled on only half-built one day while he was driving around with nothing much on his mind had turned out even nicer than he’d imagined. But it was Bree and Sam becoming part of his life that had turned it into a home.
In the aftermath of the shooting, his supervisor had sent him for training in negotiation, and patience, a virtue he’d not had much of before, could be learned. And that had opened up a whole new career path. Just recently promoted, he was also discovering that he loved teaching, and a portion of his time was now spent at the academy passing on some of his hard-won knowledge in the field of law enforcement.
Kett’s Hotel had annexed a stunning seaside retreat house, and Bree had been tagged to manage it. The Ketts loved her and so did the people who worked for her, but they didn’t love her nearly as much as he did. The day she’d come to his hospital room looking like a ray of sunshine with all the necessary arrangements made so they could be married right there and then, he’d thought he couldn’t love her more. And he couldn’t have been more wrong.
“Hey, Troop. Miss me?” Bree slipped through to door and bent to kiss his upturned face before climbing into his lap.
“Always. Have you eaten?”
She nodded.
Will settled her against his chest and wrapped his arms about her. “I love you to the moon and back.” He nuzzled her neck. He’d just finished reading a book by that title to their two-year-old daughter, and the words seemed just right to tell Bree what he was feeling at this particular moment.
A nearly full moon had risen about an hour earlier, and a river of glistening silver stretched across the ocean toward the little deck off their comfortable bedroom. His heart was even fuller than the moon. Sam was curled up in his favorite spot on the window seat in his room playing a game on his tablet. Anna slept soundly in her crib in her very pink bedroom with her butt in the air and her thumb in her mouth. And his wife was carrying their second child. Third, he corrected. Sam was his son now.
Will molded his hand around the swollen curve of Bree’s belly. She covered his hand with hers, and a moment later their new son kicked.
“Maybe even to the sun and back,” he murmured.
