  Chapter 1

I stared at my reflection in the mirror. “Ugh…” I groaned. This was not how I pictured myself looking when I grew up…pale skin, big eyes, average nose, and small mouth. I wanted plump, voluptuous lips…lips that would have every man standing in line to get lost in and leave every woman jealous. I shook my head in disgust. Mine were the complete opposite.

  “What are you doing?”

I jumped when I heard the question. Out of the corner of the mirror, I saw my roommate, Jill, standing there. “Nothing,” I lied, applying the finishing touches of my makeup.

Jill laughed loudly, which caused me to look up. “Right. I know exactly what you were doing. You were standing in the mirror contemplating everything you wished was different about you.”

“Then why’d you ask?” I mumbled, looking away in disgust.

“I’ve told you a million times…instead of complaining about what you wish was different about yourself...do something to change it. I offered to help you out and you never take me up on it.” She shrugged, walking out of the room. “It’s your call,” Jill said, leaving me to stare at my reflection.

While I was certain I wanted to feel better and more confident about my looks, something inside me always caused me to pause and rethink things. Jill was right. I needed to do something about it, instead of complain about it. My twenty-fifth birthday was around the corner and it was the best time for a new look…a new me. I puckered my lips and made a kissing noise in the mirror. I was definitely ready.

“Jill?” I called, leaving the bathroom.

She was already settled on the couch with the television blaring, as I entered the living room. “Yes?” she asked, but didn’t bother to turn to look at me.

“I’m ready,” I simply replied. She turned and a smile was on her lips. Jill definitely didn’t have anything to be ashamed of. Her lips were more of what I strived for. I smiled, eager to face the new chapter in my life. “What’s the next step?” I asked.

Jill glanced at her watch. “It’s Saturday, but I don’t think Leslie will mind if I bother her at home.”

“Leslie?” I asked, taking a seat on the couch.

“Dr. Bailey. The next step you need to take is meeting with the doctor and lucky for you…I happen to work with the best.” She winked at me and instantly my nerves started to take over. She grabbed her phone from the table and started to dial a number.

I reached out and grabbed the phone from her hand. “Are you sure this is what I should be doing?” I asked.

Jill stared at me. “Marisa, personally I don’t think you need to worry about it. You look perfectly fine to me. Some of the patients that come in to our office are in lots worse shape than you are, but I always tell them the same thing.”

  “What’s that?” I asked quietly.

“To follow their hearts and do what’s going to make them the happiest. If you feel that getting a lip augmentation will be what makes you the happiest, then you should do it.” She paused and looked down at her phone. “But…if you’re doing it to please other people, then you’re doing it for all the wrong reasons.” She lifted an eyebrow and looked in my direction. “You aren’t, right?”

I thought about that briefly. It was crazy to even think about that, because I didn’t have anyone that I needed to worry about. I was newly single and only was thinking about what I wanted. I always desired more out of my looks and increasing the size of my lips was something I felt compelled to do. “I want this,” I softly replied.

“So, it has nothing to do with Cole?” she asked, a smirk dancing on the corner of her lips.

I shook my head. Cole never complained about my lips or any other part of my body. I was the one that broke things off, he was smothering me way too much. This was solely my decision. I handed the phone back to her. “Make the call. I’m ready to stop prolonging the inevitable. I want this.” Excitement welled up inside of me as she dialed up the number and waited for an answer.

Her eyes brightened, proving that she answered the phone. “Hey, Leslie, it’s Jill. I have a friend…” her eyes met mine, “My friend, Jill, is hoping to set up a consultation with you.” I dropped my eyes to her lips and imagined myself with the same vibrant facial expressions and my decision became even more appealing. “Tonight would be great.” I looked up at Jill, unable to comprehend the words. Tonight? Was she serious? “We’ll see you then. Thanks so much, Leslie. Goodbye.” She disconnected the phone, looking pleased with her conversation. “We’re going to meet her at Bennigan’s at seven o’clock.”

“Whoa…hold up. I’m really confused. We’re meeting her at a restaurant on a Saturday night? Why can’t I just go into the office on Monday morning or something? I’d feel much more comfortable then.”

Jill didn’t seem phased by my sudden uneasiness. She just shrugged it off. “I’m going to be there. There’s nothing to worry about. Besides…Leslie likes meeting with new clients outside of work.”

“That’s another thing. You call her Leslie? That seems a little bit unprofessional.”

Jill laughed. “When you meet her, you’ll understand. She’s cool and we’ve worked together for over a year. When it comes to work ethic, she’s top notch. You have nothing to worry about.” Jill stood up from the couch, but I was still uncertain about the change of events. I didn’t expect things to move so quickly, but with Jill on the job I don’t know why I was so shocked.

I got up from the couch and headed back to my bedroom. I wasn’t at all sure of how I looked now that I was going to meet Dr. Bailey. I needed to get ready, because everything was about to change.

  Chapter 2

“Marisa, you don’t have to be so nervous,” Jill whispered as we entered the restaurant. I looked down at my clothes that I had chosen and regretted it profusely. I look like a tramp. Who am I trying to kid? With my short skirt and low-cut top, I looked like I was ready to audition for a slutty magazine, not find out the steps I would have to take to get my new lips.

“Hello and welcome to Bennigan’s. Just two today?” The young hostess greeted us, pleasantly.

“Actually, we’re meeting Dr. Leslie Bailey,” Jill spoke up.

My eyes wandered to the woman’s lips. They were plump and accentuated with bright red lipstick. My hands touched my lips and a pale, gawky pink came off on my finger. I should’ve chosen another color. It was too late. We followed the hostess and she led us to a nice big table in the back. “Enjoy,” the woman said, smiling as she left us three menus. Dr. Bailey wasn’t there yet, but we took our seats.

“Are you calming down?” Jill asked.

“Not really,” I mumbled. I opened my menu and looked at the choices, but my mind was elsewhere, thinking about my attire and the way my makeup wo
uld show off all my flaws. I barely noticed when the doctor approached the table.

“Leslie…” Jill said, welcoming the doctor. Jill stood up and hugged her. I noticed how they interacted with a personal tone and found it strange, but it was nice to see the easiness between them. “This is, Marisa Jamison.” Jill stepped back and pointed to me.

I did my best to smile. “Hello!” I stood up from the table and presented my hand. She warmly smiled and shook my hand with a firm shake. It was when I looked at her lips that I was certain I was in the best of company. Her lips were moist and voluptuous, with a hint of rose color that proved she had what it took to show off her perfect features. I had to bite my lip and tear my eyes away from staring at her. “It’s a pleasure to meet you,” I said, meeting her blue eyes.

She smiled brightly. “You too, Marisa. Have a seat.” We all sat down and looked in the menu. I still didn’t know how I felt about meeting her in a restaurant, but I did my best to focus on the reason we were there. “I want to thank you for meeting with me on such short notice,” I started.

She held up her finger to silence me. “I believe in holding business to the end. We’ll get to it.” Again she smiled, curving her perfect lips up and causing jealousy inside of me.

I looked down at the menu, so that I could divert my eyes away from her. I would do it her way, if the end result got me what I wanted. We were on her time.

  ***

Despite the fact that it seemed like supper would never end. We did eventually get the table cleared and we finally were able to discuss why I was there in the first place. “So, I hear that you are interested in getting some work done.”

I nodded, even though I was doing my best at keeping my mind cleared, I couldn’t stop focusing on the way her lips moved when she talked. I glanced to where Jill was sitting across from me and next to Dr. Bailey. She nodded slightly to urge me to talk. “I would like some work done on my lips.” I looked down at the table. As the words came out, I felt so small in that room. “I mean…if that’s a possibility.”

I looked up to find that Dr. Bailey’s eyes were now on my lips. I fought the urge to lick them, but I felt self-conscious in that moment. “That’s a possibility, but may I ask your reasoning behind it.”

“Well…I want them to be fuller and I hope it improves my appearance. They just are thin and barely noticeable. I don’t like the way they look.” I was rambling, but the way she continued to stare at me made me feel more nervous. “What’s the procedure?” I asked.

“We have a couple of options. We offer injections that injects collagen into your lips to enhance them to the desired fullness. You do, however, need to come back into the office at least every six months. Or, we have a procedure that implants a tissue into your lips. It’s pretty minimal, but only certain people qualify for that procedure.”

I glanced between my best friend and the doctor. I didn’t have a preference as long as I got the look that I wanted to portray. “Okay…that sounds great. How do I find out if I’m a candidate?”

“You would have a consultation with me in the office and from there we’d decide the best way for you to go. If you’d like we can go to the office right now. I know that next week is pretty busy and this way we can get the procedure scheduled. What you think?”

“Okay,” I nervously answered. “Um…can you give me a minute? I’ll be just a moment.” I stood up from the table. I needed some alone time, before deciding on what I was going to do. I still had some uncertainty, even though I felt good about my choice. I headed to the bathroom and took a few deep breaths. Again, I questioned my look. I didn’t know what I was thinking leaving the house looking that way. I attempted my best at positioning my blouse and not showing too much cleavage, then looked at my lips. “This is exactly why I want to do this,” I mumbled. A woman came out of the stall and washed her hands, then gave me a strange look. I didn’t care.

I waited until she left and then pushed through the swinging door and headed back to our table. As I neared the table, I stopped. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Leslie and Jill were making out at the table. They were passionately kissing like it was the most natural thing in the world and Leslie’s hands were all over my friend. As quickly as I saw it, it ended. I was sure that Jill was worried I would see. Nothing made sense and all I could do was go back to the table and act like I saw nothing, even though I couldn’t get it out of my mind.

  Chapter 3

“You’re being awfully quiet,” Jill said as she drove toward the doctor’s office.

“What?” I asked, absentmindedly paying attention.

“Ever since we left the restaurant, you’ve just been really quiet. Are you nervous…excited…anxious…?”

“Yes…” I quickly responded. I was all of those things and I didn’t know whether I wanted to mention to Jill what I saw her and Dr. Bailey doing. It seemed surreal. Was she a lesbian? I didn’t recall knowing that piece of information about her. It didn’t matter to me, but why the secrecy and how long had it been going on?

  “We’re here!” she said.

I barely noticed us pull into the small office. She parked the car and then we each got out. Dr. Bailey led the way to the back door and unlocked it. “Go ahead and go to room five. I’ll be in shortly.”

Jill hung back, but I motioned for her to follow us. I didn’t want to do this alone. I really needed the support. It was only a couple of minutes, before the doctor was entering the room. She held a book in her hand and pulled the rolling stool across the floor and sat down right in front of me.

“You can look through here and you will get a couple ideas of the types of lips you’re aiming for.”

I grabbed the book. It was like shopping through a catalog. I opened it up and turned the pages. Each picture had a woman that I could picture as myself, from plump, full, and juicy lips to just a touch more than mine. If I was going to change…I wanted it to be drastic. I continued to look through, until I picked out my three favorites.

“What about this one?” I asked, pointing to the picture and showing Jill and Dr. Bailey. The woman had a broad smile with nice rosy lips that completely drew you in.

“Well…those are nice, but your cheekbones might be too low to really pull that look off.” Dr. Bailey shrugged and looked at Jill. “What do you think?”

I anxiously waited for Jill’s response. Jill looked at the picture and nodded. “Yeah, besides I think that might be too much of a change.”

I was disappointed, because I was aiming for a big change and now I felt I was being shut down. “What’s the next choice?” Dr. Bailey asked.

I turned the pages and pointed to another woman’s picture. She looked down and nodded. “That’s better.” She rolled her stool a little closer to me and cupped my face in her hands. I froze, dropping the book on the floor. Her cherry red lips were only inches from my pale pink. Her fingers brushed across my cheeks, spreading them out, like she was measuring what I had to offer. We were so close that I could almost taste her breath. Her heavy breathing entered the room, as she playfully massaged my facial features. “Yes…that could fit you nicely,” she stated. I instantly got excited by her words. My body shifted in my seat and pressure formed in my womanhood. “But…” she slowly continued. But? There is no but? My heart crashed against my chest. “I have to admit, I don’t really think you need the work and I want you to think long hard about this decision. Your lips are nice. Why mess with them?”

My jaw dropped slightly. The fact that another woman just said my lips were nice should cause me to run, but it left me satisfied and pleased.

“Thank you,” I slowly replied, acknowledging the compliment. “However, I’ve spent my life wanting something more and I think I’ve finally feel at peace with this decision.”

It sounded lame, but I didn’t care. “Okay, then I would say that I would recommend you get the implants.” She rolled her stool back and reached into a drawer, retrieving a black book. All business was what was now on the ta
ble. “The problem is, I don’t have many openings. I’m booked solid for two months.”

I sunk back into my seat. “You don’t have anything?” I asked.

She looked back through her book and then looked up to meet my stare. “Well…if you’re willing to come in late on Monday and Jill is willing to work overtime…I suppose I could squeeze you in then, but we’re talking seven thirty or so.”

I turned to Jill and she was nodding, which relieved me. “That would be great,” I exclaimed.

“Okay, then we’ll do that. Monday night I’ll see you at seven thirty and we’ll get this done.” She jotted it into her book and put the book away, then stood up and walked us to the door.

“Thank you, Dr. Bailey.” I shook her hand, excited for Monday night.

“See you then!” Dr. Bailey waved to us as Jill and I left the office. I didn’t know how I was going to get some rest before then, but I would give it a try.

  Chapter 4

I was right. It wasn’t easy sleeping. I tossed and turned all Saturday night following the consultation with Dr. Bailey and when Sunday came…I couldn’t stop thinking about what the following day would bring. I also couldn’t stop thinking about the kiss that I inadvertently saw between Jill and her boss and Jill seemed to sense something was up.

Sunday evening, before I got around for bed, she questioned it. “Ever since we left the restaurant last night, you seem to have something on your mind.”

I hesitated, before speaking. “I do have something on my mind. It really is a huge decision.”
