  I went to Val’s room across from mine and disconnected the recording device. I carried it back to my room. I sat down in a chair with my cleaned-and-oiled automatic in my lap and waited for the money to dry.

  When it did, I’d check out.

  Nothing should tie me to the Miramar, but it made sense to use another motel until I was ready to spring Hazel.

  I didn’t feel sleepy.

  I sat there, smoking an occasional cigarette, until it was time to pack and leave.
