  Footnotes

  * Altering the playing surface to dampen fast runners and base stealers is not nearly as common today as it was when La Russa first came up as a player in the early 1960s. When the Dodgers came to town, groundskeepers would give the dirt in front of the plate and on the base paths between first and second a healthy soaking to make it soupy and beachlike, to help prevent Maury Wills and Willie Davis from simply slapping the ball high to get on first and then stealing second. Conversely, the Dodgers packed their own surface to resemble concrete, to make it as easy as possible for Wills and Davis to slap the ball high to get on first and then steal second.

  * Mabry subsequently returned to the Cardinals for the 2004 season. He hit .296, an indication that he accepted La Russa's apology.

  ***

  * In 2004, La Russa switched from regular glasses at night games to tinted ones. The reason for the switch was to shield his eyes from code breaking.

  * Rodriguez hit 59 home runs, scored 241 runs, drove in 207 runs, and averaged .329 his first two seasons. Bonds hit 49 home runs, scored 196 runs, drove in 117 runs, and averaged .272. Pujols hit 71 home runs, scored 230 runs, drove in 257 runs, and averaged .321 his first two seasons.

  * Ryan struck out nineteen Red Sox hitters in the game, on June 14, 1974. Chief among them was Cecil Cooper, who struck out six times in a row. He also walked ten batters before being lifted, achieving a rare baseball double-double. The Angels won in the fifteenth 4–3.

  * The last major-league pitcher to throw thirty complete games was Catfish Hunter of the A's in 1975, and the last to throw twenty was Fernando Valenzuela of the Dodgers in 1986. In 2001, Curt Schilling was the National League leader with six, the lowest complete game total ever.
