The Forgeron Legacy Page 5

Standing outside of Common Grounds waiting for Amy Emma stared intently at the antique store across the street, trying to ignore the shapes flitting in the corner of her vision. They were more obvious today than usual. She could almost see a little shape dancing around the coffee cup of the lady sitting at the table next to her.

Emma was focused so completely on the antique store than she didn’t hear the footsteps coming up behind her or the shadow that covered hers. A hand landed on her shoulder, startling Emma. She whirled around, tripping over her feet as she did.

“Emma!” Amy said with a laugh, catching her friend. “I shouted your name five times. I swear, you are the only person I know who can tune out the world so entirely that you only see what is directly in front of you.” Across the street a girl waved to Amy, distracting her while Emma refocused on the world around her. Amy waved ecstatically at the girl, miming that she should call her later.

“I wish I only saw what was in front of me.” Emma muttered, trying not to look at the little shape next to the woman’s coffee.

“What?” Amy asked, looking back at her.

Emma looked at her innocently. “Nothing.” She said, quirking her eyebrows comically.

A startled exclamation burst from the woman, quickly followed by the sound of her chair clattering to the ground as she jumped to her feet, coffee staining the front of her blouse and pants. On the table her cup rolled back and forth on it’s side, the last of the coffee leaking out onto the table.

“Ooohhh, good thing her coffee was iced.” Amy whispered as she linked her arm with Emma’s and turned to walk inside.

As they walked away Emma could have sworn she saw a little shape bent over laughing as the lady frantically grabbed napkins to clean up the mess.
