The Knick Knack Nightmare Page 15

by C. M. Bacon

“I am.” Martin’s eyebrows scrunched. “Can I help you with something, Detective?”

“As I’m sure you’re aware, there was a lot of property damage and a great many burglaries during the police strike last week. Stolen cars and food, several broken windows, and such.”

Martin nodded. “I was away on business, but Debbie filled me in.”

  “You were away, you say?”

Mom wrapped her arm around Martin’s elbow. “I told you when the officer took the report.”

Detective Masters removed a plastic bag from his jacket pocket and unfolded it in front of his chest. “Can you explain this?” Inside the bag was a wrinkled dollar with a note scrawled across George Washington’s face, I apologize for the window. My secretary will send a check. Regards, Martin Wexler.

Mom’s eyes bulged, her teeth clenched, and she glared at Arvin.

  Ms. Pewter cracked her knuckles.

Arvin looked down the street at the cross-city bus driving away.

I smiled at him. “Face it. You’re dragon food.”
