  “Right.”

  “Well, there you are then. Flip a coin.”

  Meaning that it was fifty-fifty whether Langley would reward Gorshani for his service to the cause or try to use him yet again. And it was always possible, of course, that they would simply cut him loose, perhaps with severance pay, a handshake and a solemn “Don’t call us.”

  Brognola broke in on his thoughts, saying, “You did some good, the two of you. Hell, you know that, of all people.”

  “It wasn’t his choice, though,” Bolan replied. “Pulling up roots, I mean. He didn’t see that coming.”

  “Then he wasn’t looking far enough ahead,” Brognola said. “You need to think about the long view, even if you can’t see past the next ten seconds.”

  Bolan nodded once again, acceptance of the truth that had defined his life since he’d first donned a uniform, and then after he’d discarded it.

  “Too bad, though,” Bolan said.

  “Maybe he’ll have a happy ending.”

  “Maybe.”

  “Anyway,” Brognola said, “another job’s come up. We ought to talk about it.”

  “So, let’s talk,” Bolan replied.

  He kept pace with his oldest living friend, among the ranks of graves.
