It was beginning to make sense to Jackson. “I drowned?”

“You did,” she said as she brushed loose hair out of his face.

  “You give me CPR?”

  “In a way.”

“What do you mean? Natalia?” Jackson began to shudder. “Did I die?”

“You did,” she said with a warm smile. “But I saved you…my childe.”

Jackson reached up into his mouth and found exactly what he feared: two sharp teeth. “You turned me?”

“It would’ve been a waste not to.”

Jackson thought he should have been more scared, but he wasn’t. He was curious though—incredibly curious. “So, I’m like you now?”

“Not exactly. See, you had something else in your blood before me. You’d been infected—something otherworldly got to you before me.”

“Moselle fed off me. She was a mummy. Sabrina and I… And she healed me once.” Then it dawned on him. “Kintner. He nearly killed me, stuck me with all these weird invisible spears…or needles… I don’t know what to call them.”

“And what was Kintner?” Natalia asked.

  “I-I don’t know. I have no clue.”

“Relax, there’s no need to worry yourself, Jackson. She’s here and she will answer all our questions and put us on our right path.” Natalia stood and smiled. “It just so happens that she’s in need of a new champion.”

  “Who?”

Jackson watched Natalia motion to someone standing in the shadows he had not noticed. When the figure—the thing stepped into view, a sense of dread overwhelmed him and he began to shake.

  “Who—who are you?”

“I am War,” she said. “And you…you are special.”

  Epilogue

Hidden in the South Pacific, on a small land mass surrounded by a dense barrier reef, deep within the Water Kingdom’s Palace, inside the most well-guarded room, several candles flickered and a soft tune played from a child’s wind-up toy.

  “Mommy?” an infant called out.

After a deep inhale and long sigh, she answered, “Yes, sweetie, I’m here. Mommy’s here.”

  “Mommy…”

“Hush, baby. Don’t you worry. Through the flames, we unite. Through the flames, we become kin.”

  The End

The tale of the Water Kingdom may be over, but the story of the Fire Kingdom has just begun.
