Cooking with Fire Page 7

by Kira Barcelo

“Well, good! But there’s more than business going on between you two. Isn’t there?”

Carolyn was friendly but guarded. What did that woman have up her sleeve? “I didn’t expect it, but yes. There’s more than business.”

“Good. I’m glad. You know, it—it didn’t work out between me and Alex. I guess he might’ve told you.” Pam paused, sighing. “But he deserves somebody that’s good for him. Somebody like you.”

Relaxing a little, Carolyn smiled. “Thank you. He can be—umm—”

  “Bossy?”

“Yes!” She found herself laughing with Pam. “And I’m a little, oh, I guess you’d say, he hasn’t had it easy with me, either. For one thing, being on time isn’t a strength of mine. And I’ve been known to be at the manicurist getting my nails done when I was supposed to be here.”

“Ahh, so I guess you’ve learned that Alex can be strict. Real strict.”

Carolyn could feel herself blushing. That’s right; he said he spanked her, too.

“Yeah, he is,” she mumbled. “Very strict.”

Pam gave her a mischievous wink. “The man may cook better than any woman I’ve ever known, but he ain’t no sensitive beta male.”

“Nope. I learned that.” To her surprise, she confided, “He’s already turned me over his knee. Twice. And, boy, does he spank hard.”

“Ohhhh.” Pam shook her head, her smile sympathetic. “I know the feeling. Chef Alex Stanton tenderized my butt lots of times, too.”

“Yeah, well, he tenderized mine and roasted it.” She almost gave her still-sore bottom a soothing rub right there at the front of the restaurant, nearly unwittingly giving her customers a show before catching herself.

The woman laughed but then became serious. “Are you okay with that? Some women, you know…”

She was thoughtful for a moment. During and after both times that Alex had spanked her, she would have appreciated talking with someone who understood the feelings she’d experienced. How ironic that the person who would qualify as a confidante was Pam.

“You know, I actually am okay with it,” Carolyn said with certainty. “More than okay. Although…going to the manicurist or the gym, or anywhere when I’m supposed to be here? That’s not gonna happen again anytime soon, I assure you. I’m going to try not to meet up with that paddle again.”

Pam winced. “Well, good for you, honey. And—oh, it looks like you have some company. I’ll let you go. Good luck with Joie de Vivre!…and good luck to both you and Alex.”

  “Thank you, Pam.”

When she turned, Alex was waiting for her. Her handsome, hunky chef, smiling and gazing at her with absolute affection. Cook better than any woman she’d known? Never mind that, she’d never seen anybody quite rock a chef’s jacket as her sexy Alex.

“You’re wanted in the kitchen, my beautiful partner,” he teased.

“I am? All right, sir, then I’m on my way!”

Carolyn’s eyes widened when she entered the kitchen. Standing there was her entire staff except for Jamie, who was out in the dining room tending to patrons. The editor of Joie de Vivre!, who introduced himself as Michael Carvey, stood surrounded by his staff. His smile broadened with Carolyn approached, followed by Alex, who came to stand at her side and wrapped an arm around her waist.

“First off, Ms. Hammond,” the editor began, “I want to say that I grew up here in town. That’s how I came to know Pam. We went to school together. So I remember the Beachcomber Bistro.”

“Oh, same here!” Carolyn conquered her shyness enough to put on a confident air. “My brother and I both had great memories of this place.”

“So do I and my family.” Michael Carvey extended his hand for her to shake. “We’ll be writing up a review. It should be appearing in the next issue, which will actually be November’s. We don’t usually tell restaurant owners about their review ahead of time, but in the Beachcomber Bistro’s case we’re going to make an exception.”

“Okay.” She held her breath, comforted by the little squeeze Alex gave her waist.

Pausing for dramatic effect, the editor’s eyes lit up. “Five stars. Easily. Five stars for excellent food, for warm, professional service, for a terrific staff, for an ambience that will bring ’em back again and again. Congratulations, Carolyn and Alex!”

She nearly hadn’t heard his last few words over the jubilant cheers from her relieved and ecstatic staff. Carolyn thanked the magazine people and watched them exit the kitchen before Alex twirled her around to face him.

“You did it!” she exclaimed. “You saved this place, Alex Stanton.”

“No, baby, we saved it,” he insisted, hugging her waist and drawing her up close against him. “Me, our great chefs and wait staff…and especially you—my favorite little dish!”
