  A NOTE ON THE TYPE

The text of this book is set in Linotype Goudy Old Style. It was designed by Frederic Goudy (1865— 1947), an American designer whose types were very popular during his lifetime, and particularly fashionable in the 1940s. He was also a craftsman who cut the metal patterns for his type designs, engraved matrices, and cast type.

The design for Goudy Old Style is based on Goudy Roman, with which it shares a "hand-wrought" appearance and asymmetrical serifs, but unlike Goudy Roman its capitals are modeled on Renaissance lettering.

  A NOTE ON THE AUTHOR

Daniel Wolff is the author of You Send Me: The Life and Times of Sam Cooke, which won the Ralph J. Gleason Award for best music book of 1995. He was nominated for a Grammy for his liner notes to Complete Recordings of Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers. His journalism has appeared in Vogue, the Nation, and Doubletake, and his poetry in the Paris Review, the Partisan Review, and the Threepenny Review.
