Something in the Water Page 19

“Sir,” a woman walked up to us, her gaze fixed on Daven. He pushed to his feet, panic in his eyes. “Mr. Beckett is out of surgery. He’d lost a lot of blood, but we’ve gotten him stable, and it looks like he’s going to pull through.”

I squealed, wrapping my arms around Daven’s neck and he lifted me from the ground. “Can we see him?”

  “Are you family?”

“Ya’, she’s family,” Daven replied, giving my shoulders an extra squeeze.

  “Follow me.”

I trudged behind the doctor to Ford’s room, my heart feeling like it might explode. Stopping outside of the small observation window next to the door, I smiled when his face turned toward me, a grin on his lips.

Daven leaned over, hugging him. They exchanged a few words, and I let them have their moment of privacy. Our entire world had been flipped upside down and destroyed. It was going to take a long time for everyone to heal. But I knew when I heard Ford laugh that we were ready to begin that journey and start over.

Swallowing back my fear, I stepped inside, sliding my fingers over his.

“Hey,” he whispered, his voice rough like sandpaper.

  “Hey.”

“I’ll give you two a minute,” Daven broke the silence, clearing his throat. I watched as he slipped back into the hallway.

“I was thinking, when I get out of this place, maybe I should take you on a date.”

I shook my head, arching an eyebrow as I struggled to suppress my smirk. “My momma said when a guy buys you dinner, he expects something in return.”

“All I want is you.” He reached up, wiping a tear that clung to my lower lashes.

  “Anywhere I want to go?”

His palm slid behind my neck, and he pulled me closer, pressing his lips against mine.

“Anywhere you want to go. Just name it. We can be in Mexico by morning,” he teased.

“I’d follow you anywhere, Ford Beckett.”
