“So where is the hope for us then? I mean, if we’re going backward instead of forward, why are we living?”
“A good and important question,” said John, “which brings us to the subject of karma yet again, and makes it necessary for you to grasp your basic identity and the understanding of the power of your free will to understand your divinity and partnership with God.”
“Excuse me,” I said, “but can I ask where religion fits into all this, please?”
“There is much that I am saying that your worldly religions would take exception to. Your religions teach religion—not spirituality. Religion has exploited man for the most part. Your world religions are on the right track basically, but they do not teach that every individual is fundamentally the creator and controller of his own destiny. They teach that God assumes such a role. What I am endeavoring to explain is that each individual is a co-creator with God. This does not sit well with your churches and religions because they prefer to have control over mankind, rather than help teach that mankind can only control itself through self-knowledge and through knowledge of its past and of its purpose in the present and future.”
I was aware of how explosive such a concept would be. But didn’t many people within the Church pursue self-knowledge? Weren’t there many people who, while following the precepts of the Church, still searched restlessly for truth beyond precepts?
I looked out the window across the dark ocean. A fishing boat blinked its light in the darkness. I wondered how many of the great truths in life one might never be able to see or prove or confirm. It was unsettling and anxiety-arousing. Was the truth only truth when we could “prove” it? I couldn’t cope with what I was thinking. I looked away from the window and back to Kevin and the “disembodied spiritual entity” he was channeling.
“So,” I said anxiously, and finding myself slightly breathless, “so I lived way back in some ancient civilization?”
“Yes, several times,” said John. “Twice as a male and once as a female.”
I was quiet as one of the finer points of reincarnation hit home again. “Have we all experienced living as different sexes in order to be able to empathize with the opposite sex?”
“That is correct,” said John. “Certainly. How else could mankind reach an understanding of itself and its identities without such diversified physical experiences?”
I leaned forward again. “Could that be a metaphysical explanation for homosexuality?” I asked. “I mean, maybe a soul makes a rocky transition from a female to a male body, for instance, and there is left over emotional residue and attraction from the previous incarnation?”
“As such,” said John. “The sexual preference of such individuals plays an important part in the requirement for understanding that we are all basically the same because we have all experienced being both sexes; our souls, if you will, are basically androgynous.”
“Androgynous?” I asked.
“Yes, high spiritual understanding knows no sexuality differences because the elements of both sexes are simultaneously present. The polarities are evenly opposed. Your ancient prophets and Christ figures such as Jesus and Buddha, et cetera, were not so much celibate as they were vibrating at an even and perfectly balanced frequency. Their yin and yang were so evenly distributed that sexuality was of no interest to them because there was no conflict and therefore no tension. It was not a subject they needed to sublimate or repress. It simply didn’t interest them because of their peaceful spiritual level of achievement.”
“I’m not sure I’d be ready to trade.”
John paused a moment. “We don’t recommend the abstaining of sex,” he said. “Definitely not. Sex in human terms is also a pathway to God if it is enjoyed spiritually as well as physically.”
I looked at the tape recorder. “Excuse me,” I said, “are we getting off the subject?”
“Yes,” said John. “But sex is a fascinating subject, even for me.”
I laughed. “And who are you?” I asked. “I mean, were you once in a physical body?”
“Oh yes,” said John. “I have embodied many times as both male and female but recently have remained in astral form.”
“I see,” I said. I was curious but I really wanted to know about myself.
“So, who was I in my previous lives?”
“According to the Akashic Records, you were incarnate with a twin soul.”
“Oh? What exactly is a twin soul?”
“That question takes a great deal of explanation which I will endeavor to accomplish later. For now, let me begin by explaining soul mates.”
“Soul mates?” I asked. I had heard the term from time to time, usually in reference to people who said they had found their other half.
“Soul mates,” John continued, “were actually created for one another at the beginning of time, or what you call at the moment of the Big Bang. They vibrate at exactly the same electromagnetic frequency because they are identical counterparts of one another. Twin souls are more common to find because they have experienced many lifetimes together in one form or another. But soul mates were actually created at the beginning of time as pairs who belonged together … So you see, there is more to your Big Bang theory than you imagine … and quite romantic at that, wouldn’t you say?”
I made some noncommittal noise.
“So let me begin there,” said John, “where, as I said, we knew each other.”
“Oh?”
“Yes, we were teacher and pupil. You were one of my brightest, and what you would term today, ‘pet students.’ ”
I looked around my living room wishing I had someone to share this with. “So we knew each other?”
“Correct. It is no accident that you are here today. We believe you have matured to the understanding that there is no such thing as an accident?”
“Who’s ‘we’ again?” I asked.
“Your spiritual guides, of whom I am one,” said John.
“You mean, I was drawn here somehow by you and these guides?”
“That is correct,” said John.
“How?”
“By your own need to explain your behavior and your questions and your search for the truth and by psychic guidance from those of us who feel you are ready for more of your own truth.”
“Is that what is meant by Spiritual Guidance?”
“That is correct.”
There was a pause as John the Voice seemed to be gathering his thoughts, or some kind of information, or both. Quite casually the Voice resumed and said:
“We have isolated your vibration during one of the lifetimes that you spent with an entity with whom you are also now involved. We believe this entity is living in your British Isles. Would that be correct?”
“Gerry?” I said with a rather high-pitched squeak. “Are you talking about Gerry?”
“As such. We have also isolated his vibration and find that the two of you were man and wife during one of your previous lifetimes.”
“Oh, my God,” I said, amused and flabbergasted. “Did we get along then? I mean, was communication better between us then than it is now?”
There was another pause.
“Your Gerry was equally devoted to his work then. And we must admit it was to the detriment of your union. However, he was doing important work involving cultural exchanges with the extraterrestrials who were endeavoring to be of help technologically and spiritually.”
“Extraterrestrials?” John seemed to sense my astonishment. He replied more firmly than usual.
“As such. There were extraterrestrials visiting this planet then, as now.”
“Oh, Jesus.” I took a breath. “Well, could you tell me more about that? I mean, what are you really saying? Are you saying that we have had outer space visitations since the beginning of time?”
“That is correct. There are planets more advanced in knowledge than your Earth, just as your Earth is more advanced than some other planets.”
I deliberately relaxed mys
elf and breathed deeply. I supposed the logic of what he was saying held together in its own terms. But I wished I knew what questions to ask.
“Well,” I said, floundering around in my own head. Maybe this was all an act, but what if it wasn’t? I didn’t want to waste an opportunity to learn something. “Well,” I said again, “what kind of knowledge were these extraterrestrials bringing?”
John answered immediately. “The only important knowledge is the spiritual knowledge of God within man. Every other knowledge flows from that.”
“Every other knowledge?”
“That is correct. Your scientific knowledge, for example, depends on your understanding of vibrational frequencies and how they pertain to the universe. God is love—which is the highest vibrational frequency of all. In your physical world light is the highest and fastest speed frequency. But to beings who have more knowledge, more control, thought has a much higher frequency than light. Thought is part of God, just as thought is part of man. Therefore, when thought is love your frequencies are vibrating at the highest level of energy. That is what the extraterrestrials were teaching just as you of the Earth plane will someday teach it to others. Is this to your understanding?”
I didn’t know how to answer.
I cleared my throat and tried to stretch my mind to understand. I couldn’t personally relate to what John was saying in any specific or detailed and understandable way. The implications of what he was saying were so stunning that I couldn’t really think of a good question. I wanted to get back to myself. That I could cope with.
“Excuse me, please,” I said. “Could I just ask you about me? I’m having enough trouble just relating to that.”
“Of course,” said John. “You must proceed at your own pace.”
“Okay,” I said, relieved. “Thank you. So Gerry and I were man and wife. Does that mean we were twin souls?”
“No. But you were and are a twin soul of the entity you call David.”
I stopped him. “You know about David, too?”
“That is correct. You had several lifetimes with the David entity during that early period, as well as many others down through the march of time.”
Maybe that was why I felt so comfortable with David now.
But John was continuing. “Your David is a good teacher and you can trust him. But we feel that you already feel that. You must learn to trust your feelings more and refrain from approaching so many issues in life from strictly an intellectual perspective. Intellect as a marvel is limited. Feelings are limitless. Trust your heart … or your intuition, as you term it.”
Trust my intuition? Yes, I could see that as I thought back on my life I could fairly say that whenever I went against my intuition I got in trouble. “You’re saying that if we all follow what is in our hearts we’ll be fine?”
“No. Not necessarily. There are wrong, or hurtful, feelings to be overcome. But mankind, and all life, is basically good. You must learn to give it a chance. Life represents the thought of God and God is love.”
Frankly, all this talk of “God” was embarrassing me. “Okay.” I said, “but what do you call God?”
“God, or the God Force, of which all things are a part,” said John, “is the Divine Energy that created the Universe and holds it together harmoniously.”
“You would describe what’s going on here as harmonious?”
“In the ultimate scheme of life, yes, it is harmonious in the sense that matters are balancing out. But you must understand the process of each soul’s progress and reembodiment and purification to understand the harmony.”
“Wait a minute,” I said. “Isn’t the Bible supposed to be the Word of God?”
“Yes, in the main it is. Although much of what exists in your Bible today has been reinterpreted.”
“Reinterpreted by whom?”
“By various persons through time and through various languages. Ultimately, by the Church. It was to the advantage of the Church to ‘protect the people’ from the real truth.”
“The real truth being what?”
“The real truth being the process of each soul’s progression through the ages. The real truth being each soul’s responsibility for its own behavior in the realization of its own divinity.”
“You mean reincarnation?”
“That is correct. That is the word you use to term it. That is the carrying out of Cosmic Justice toward an ultimate harmony.”
“Well, would the Church deny us that truth?”
“Yes, because such a truth would make the power and the authority of the Church unnecessary. Each person, that is, each entity, becomes responsible to itself for its conduct. It does not need a church. It does not need rituals, and stratifications, and cubbyholes to crawl into to get absolution issued by the Church. Let us say simply that the authorities in the Church desired to ‘shelter’ mankind from a truth they felt you were not prepared for.”
“You mean in somewhat the same spirit that governments act today?”
“As such.”
I stretched out on my carpet. I didn’t know what to think, nor could I think of any more questions. Kevin sat impassively in the chair. The tea on the table was cold.
“Will there be any more inquiries then?” asked John.
I looked out at the blinking lights of the fishing boat.
I thought of some of the people I had talked to who found me naive and gullible for even considering the believability of disembodied spiritual masters speaking through a medium. How could I fall for such stuff, they said. I had always replied that I felt I was simply learning. I wasn’t sure what it meant really but it somehow confirmed to me that there were more dimensions to the reality of life than one understood—in somewhat the same way that the dimensions of our own personalities and characters were a mystery to us until we began to explore those aspects which we were not familiar with and certainly were not aware of because we couldn’t “see” them.
But why did I feel more comfortable than some others in allowing myself to explore dimensions of unprovable possibilities? I really didn’t know. It just felt all right. That’s all I could say. It didn’t threaten me. It didn’t upset my emotional investment in what I was already sure was real: it did not seem to destroy my image of myself. This whole exploration simply seemed to be expanding what my perceptions of reality already were. So I wondered, then, why some of my friends, and Gerry in particular, found this pursuit of a new knowledge along spiritual paths, through mediums and reincarnation, so threatening in terms of my credibility. Why were they so worried for me? Out of love and protectiveness certainly. They didn’t want to see me ridiculed—any more than I did. But it was more than that. They were also threatened themselves. Why? Why not ask questions seriously and delve into areas and possibilities that were not necessarily “provable”? What “real” harm could it do? Would it shatter the conditioned images they had of themselves? Would it confuse their own views of “reality”?
I turned over onto my knees.
“John,” I said, “why do so many people find this phenomenon of trance channeling a disembodied master such as yourself through a human instrument so unacceptable?”
There was a slight pause.
“Because,” he said, “they do not remember the experience of having been disembodied themselves. People think that life is the totality of everything they see. They believe that man himself is simply a body and a brain. But personality is more.”
“How do you mean?”
“Personality is the intangible aspect of consciousness which is only lodged in the body for a brief period of cosmic time.”
“But they don’t believe that concept is real.”
“Real?” asked John. “Is a thought not real? Yet how does one scientifically prove that? Thought is energy. Those who question the physical existence of a thought, or of thought energy, question with deep skepticism their own identities.”
“Yes, but aren’t questions good? I mean, absolute certainty in somethin
g creates egomania and corruptive power.”
“That is correct. But it is worrisome when skepticism becomes so profound and demoralizing that it restricts the potential of learning glorious truths which would be in their favor.”
“But how can I convey to them that being open-minded is actually wise?”
“You do not have to do that. You who are open-minded simply say what is from your point of view. Give the skeptics the freedom to be skeptical. If you did not I would accuse you of being an enslaver. Give them the privilege of continuing their doubt. There will come a time when they too will want to know and they will be drawn to dimensions which are more true. They will seek a greater counsel when they are ready. If people insist upon remaining within their “logical” belief systems they are safe within their own perceived reality, and thus are safe within the position of power they hold, whatever that power might be. They will not change their perceptions and thus be required to change themselves or grow into an expanded awareness of themselves.”
“But what about the security of one’s ego?” I asked.
“Most people are suffering from altered egos. Altered by society, by the Church, and by education. Their true egos know the truth. I am as believable as anyone else. You cannot see me but there are many aspects of yourself that you cannot see either. People are searching for these aspects in themselves every day. But while they search they require that their worlds remain secure. To believe I am as real as they would be to deter them from their comfort zones—the zones they understand and can control. When you begin to understand more you are essentially understanding that there is so much more to understand that is beyond your grasp.”
“No, but that isn’t what people say to me. What they tell me is that the whole theory of reincarnation is too tidy. They say it is too simple-minded to be real.”
