Introduction
Welcome to Replay, the ocean-side BDSM theme resort where patrons come to play in the past. The settings are museum-quality, the handcrafted garments look like originals brought forward in time, and the staff members are selected for their unique talents and abilities. Each scene that they bring to life is drawn from a page in history, but no one has to suffer through it…
Unless that’s what they want.
Chapter One
Tuesday, July 12, 2016
Dr. Josef Brandt—better known as Sir Josef—obeyed the summons to attend Sir Piers in his office. Not knowing quite what to expect, he was puzzled to see the owner of Replay BDSM theme resort wearing a frown. It was Piers St. Leger’s first day back on the job after his honeymoon, and displeasure was not a look that the resort psychiatrist was used to seeing on the British Master Dominant.
Hoping to lighten his friend’s mood, Sir Josef opened on a positive note. “Pirate weekend went well. Your next one is nearly filled already.”
“Yes. Indeed.” Sir Piers rubbed a hand on the back of his neck, seeking to ease the tension. He was dressed in Regency attire today, with his hair clubbed back as was his wont. “But whilst I was gone, I received an offer to rent the resort and failed to respond to it. Buried in my emails as it was, I only excavated it this morning. I want to know what you think.”
“Certainly.” Sir Josef took the chair across from Sir Piers’s desk and went into counselor mode. As resort psychiatrist, official sessions were conducted in his personal office down the hall. Unlike the décor in Sir Piers’s office, which exuded Old World elegance, his space boasted overstuffed leather furniture for comfort and erotically-charged portraits by Tamara de Lempicka—a deliberate choice that allowed him to judge reactions of those who were being interviewed and vetted. Both sides of the resort—SSC (Safe, Sane, and Consensual) and RACK (Risk-Aware Consensual Kink)—required personal, medical, and psychological clearance for their rather elite clientele.
Settling into his high-backed leather chair, Sir Piers regarded his computer screen and tapped his chin with steepled fingers. “Word of our last Versailles scene has reached the film industry, and a movie about to start production wishes to rent Replay for two weeks, primarily for that set. They hope to use our staff as costumed extras, and may even consider some for speaking parts. Which is why you are the first to hear it.”
Sir Josef sat a little straighter. “Details, please?”
“Your Austrian accent. Your age. Your looks. I thought that you might consider trying out for the role of young Mozart’s father during his performance for King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.”
“You seem…disturbed by this.”
Sir Pie
rs sighed heavily. “Someone in Hollywood has rewritten history again. Mozart was but six when he played for Louis XV, Madame de Pompadour, and Queen Marie Leszcinska. On New Year’s Day, after dinner, the King requested that the boy play the organ. Leopold and his two gifted children stayed sixteen days at Versailles, but this script—” His lips curled in disgust. “The script completely disregards Mozart’s sister Nannerl and has an older Mozart playing for Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette! I ask you, how can I say yes to this and live with my conscience?”
Sir Josef angled his head, considering. “By separating fact from fiction,” he said simply. “Approach it from the standpoint of the businessman that you are. You have a space. They wish to use it. You have a staff with wardrobe. They hope to use that, too. Simply put, make them pay for the privilege. Decide on a figure that makes it more than worth your while, and stand firm when they seek to negotiate. Everyone who comes here pays to play. They will just be paying more.”
Sir Piers sighed heavily. “Yes. I suppose you are right. I support freedom of expression and the arts, regardless of whether or not something aligns with my personal tastes. But there is an element of time involved as well. The only block of fourteen days I can possibly book for them begins August 1. Short notice, to be certain.”
“Make note of that along with your other requirements, including the amount that they must pay, in advance, and the amount of insurance they will need to provide proof of before you will sign the rental agreement that your attorney will draw up. Be certain to pad the bill accordingly, where Ms. Bryan must work on such short notice, hmm?”
The corner of Sir Piers’s mouth slowly lifted into a grin. “Indeed, I shall. I hesitate to make a general announcement until things are settled, but I do feel that most of the staff will be amenable to performing as extras in the film. As for catering, the kitchen staff shall either find themselves very busy or we shall have a skeleton crew, with half each week being the beneficiaries of an unexpected paid vacation—courtesy of the film’s producers. I can see, there are a number of details to discuss with Miss Bryan, as well as the kitchen manager. And time is of the essence. I thank you for yours, Sir Josef—or, dare I say, Leopold Mozart? Ah, I see you smiling. You would be perfect for the part, and you know it.”
Of course he would. He was thirty-nine years old and Austrian-born. His coloring was such that he would fit the role, even before the addition of a powdered wig.
He could see it now. Versailles. Costumed nobility, royalty, and Mozart. Perfectly exquisite, despite the historical inaccuracies.
August could not come too soon.
Chapter Two
Ms. Bryan earned her money, researching and writing the agreement, then playing hardball with the film’s attorneys. In the end, Sir Piers’s proposal was accepted with the exclusion of the catering. The film company was convinced they could outsource it more affordably than the figure quoted in the rental contract. The moment the papers were signed and the money was deposited in the Replay account, Sir Piers called a staff meeting in the Versailles Room and told everyone what to expect come August.
“While the resort is rented, there will be no play on the property. No one associated with the production has been vetted, and our liability insurance is high enough without an incident, should an unauthorized person manage to stumble onto a scene. The casting director shall be here tomorrow,” he told them. “He will be interviewing locals to appear in the background, stage dressing for the actors portraying King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Historically, extras are paid a pittance, and a good deal of time is spent waiting. The thirty minutes allowed for lunch starts when the talent and crews have gone through the line. The last of the extras may have only five minutes to finish before they return to work. Since they have decided to bring in a caterer, I cannot vouch for the quality of their breakfasts and lunches, nor of their craft services that provide coffee, snacks, and late meals when filming runs long. Knowing the inaccuracies of the script, I hold no hope for the finished product. However, I do recognize that it is a unique experience to add to anyone’s list of accomplishments. Those of you who wish to participate, please leave your names and preferred contact number with Kitten. That is all.”
The others filtered out the door. Sir Josef lingered, waiting until they were alone to speak. “When this is done,” he began, “might I suggest a future play day, at a discounted rate, for anyone associated with the film who is willing and able to be vetted? To stir interest, you might consider doing a kinbaku or percussion play demonstration whilst they are here. Whet their appetites and leave them wanting more.”
Sir Piers liked that idea. “It will depend upon the shooting schedule, of course, but Replay can most certainly accommodate. Would you be willing to wield the whips, show them the differences, and explain the physiological and psychological effects? A licensed medical professional’s voice carries far more weight than mine.”
“Eleanor could narrate the scene, if she wished.” Sir Piers’s bride was a psychologist, with a special interest in sexual addiction and the use of BDSM as a healing tool.
“Her morning sickness has improved, now that she is through her first trimester, but her body craves more sleep, and she still works. Truthfully, I hesitate to even ask, knowing what her answer will be. She shall wish to help. I would rather she remain flexible. Attend if she is able or seek her bed early, whatever is in her best interest to do so.”
“Then I shall make myself available, as the need arises. And I shall leave my information with Kitten. Whether or not I play Mozart’s father, I suspect that I will greatly enjoy watching his performance.”
“As shall I,” Sir Piers said smoothly. “I have seen a video of the pianist’s first person impression of Mozart. Absolutely riveting. The musicians have already been rehearsing, but they will be coming two days early, to rehearse here prior to filming. You may sit in and listen, if you wish.” His eyes lit with humor, and he smiled with no little satisfaction when he added, “My playground. My rules, as it were.”
“Replay is the stage, and we are merely players,” Sir Josef observed. “We follow your direction above all.”
Sir Piers’s smile faded. “I cannot but think this is the single most important event we have booked to date, and it has nothing to do with the lifestyle. But it sets a precedence, should someone follow suit. When all is said and done, I shall want a full accounting—a detailed cost analysis and reviews from the entire staff giving honest opinions of their experiences. I want to hear what they did and did not like, whether they would consider doing it again, and what suggestions they have for improvement. These are things that I must know, before I can begin to consider any future proposals.”
“Understood,” Sir Josef told him. He knew Sir Piers well enough to discern an underlying concern and sought to address it. “It is your business, and therefore your reputation at stake. Your staff members are committed to seeing that the first succeeds and that the other is upheld, to the best of our abilities. Regardless of circumstance, we shall rise to the occasion, I am certain.”
“Such confidence.” Sir Piers sighed. “Now that my stomach is no longer tied up in knots, I feel the need to express myself with rope. Please, pardon me whilst I see when my wife will be available. Meanwhile, Kitten awaits your pleasure.”
Sir Josef suppressed a sigh. He avoided all but the most necessary contact with Sir Piers’s secretary Kitten, who needed a Daddy Dom. At one point, when she seemed to be attaching herself to him, he discussed the situation with Samael and secured his help in discouraging her. He’d had Sir Piers’s exotically beautiful personal assistant kneel for him and rewarded him with a kiss that left them both breathing hard.
He did sigh, then, remembering the night that followed.
It was a shame that they were not meant to be more. They had assuaged a mutual need, but their visions of the future were too disparate. Aware that relationships in the workplace seldom fared well, they had shared a lovely breakfast, agreed to re
main friends, and gone their separate ways.
Thankfully, several staff members who had signed up with Kitten remained close by her desk, quietly conversing. He was able to leave his information with her and not suffer the ignominy of having to detach himself.
Josef returned to his office. Normally, it was a haven of peace, for him and others who came here. But the flux in the energies echoed within, making him restless. Feeling a bit rebellious, he took the Baroque music CD from his player and replaced it with one from Tool, his favorite heavy metal band.
Secure in the knowledge that the walls were soundproof, he cranked up the volume, lay down on the long, leather sofa, and returned to his one night with Samael.
Sir Piers’s personal assistant had preceded him at Replay. While Josef had access to all the psychological evaluations on file, he had never had Samael in his office as a patient—an important point when considering a more intimate exchange. Sex with a co-worker was one thing. There was no way that he would risk losing his medical license by having sex with a patient.
An intriguing mix of Caucasian, Native American, and Filipino, Samael had a striking beauty about him, and his switch nature had allowed him to submit to Josef’s domination. But their visions of an ideal future failed to mesh. Samael wanted a life of fifties fantasy, a house with a picket fence. A dog. A cat. Children. None of those appealed to Josef, who was something of a solitary creature, holding himself apart, even in a crowd.
But then, he was comfortable being alone. He found escape in being a Dominant and in the arts—enjoying an eclectic mix of music, visual mediums, and literature. While he valued his privacy, he was not opposed to sharing his home and his life again. As he had told Sir Marcus, who had found his match over the Fourth of July weekend in Pirates’ Cove, “I have not been fortunate enough to find my perfect complement. My congratulations on finding yours.”
A week later, the couple still glowed with the light of new-found love.
