Not a single light had shown through any of the windows. No smoke rose from the chimney on the chilly evening. The place looked void of life, as if it had been completely deserted.
“Can you sense him in there?” Bailey called on her bear, asking her to scan the area to see if there was any sign of Gavin within the small home.
“He’s in there,” her bear confirmed.
“Can’t he sense us?” Bailey asked in confusion.
“I’m trying to get through, but there’s something blocking my connection.”
“Buddy, stay!” Bailey bolted from the SUV, fearing something had happened to Gavin.
She pounded on the door. “Gavin!”
Just as she was getting ready to kick the door in, it flew open, scaring the daylights out of her.
Her heart broke at the sight of her mate. His handsome and cleanly shaven face now looked tired, sad, and quite scruffy. Had her short absence done this to him?
Gavin rubbed his eyes, as if to make sure that what he was seeing was real. “You came back!”
“I didn’t mean to be gone so long, but I had to get things settled with my life in the city before I could fully commit to you. I had to let my boss know, my friends, get my belongings packed, and get my puppy from daycare. I couldn’t just up and leave everything hanging. My friends wondering if I was dead or alive. Buddy thinking I’d run out on him.”
“I can’t believe you actually came back! I’d lost all hope.” Gavin pulled Bailey into an actual bear hug, squeezing her so hard she thought she might pop.
“C—can’t bre—athe.”
“Oh, sorry. Wait, did you say puppy? As in a dog?”
“He’s in the car, waiting.” Bailey motioned to the car just in time to see Buddy hop up on the dashboard and wag his stubby tail.
Gavin laughed. “I think you’re the only bear shifter I know who has a dog. Well, let’s get you all inside and out of this cold.”
Chapter Seventeen
Gavin pinched himself multiple times over the course of the evening. He’d thought his mate was gone for good. When he finally accepted the reality that she’d returned to him, he paused to thank the gods above for bringing her back.
“A penny for your thoughts?” Bailey asked as she finished up her dinner.
“I was just thinking about how lucky I am to have been blessed with such a beautiful mate.”
“Beautiful, huh?”
“Absolutely,” Gavin replied. Everything about his mate screamed beauty, from her sexy ass curves to her sarcastic and independent attitude. He was positive they’d butt heads along the way, but as long as they worked toward the same goals, life would be good.
