“Here, Kitty,” he whispered again. And he froze as something brushed his ear. It hadn’t been a cat’s whisker or even fur. It had been hard, dry and rough.
From the front room, Angela yelled, “What the hell was that?”
Before he could ask what she was talking about, something grabbed his ears, both of them. Stars exploded in his eyes as his head was thrust down to bounce off the floor. He let out a pained moan and collapsed with all the grace of a gutted fish. His ears rang and light burst into the hall, causing him to close his eyes tightly. Hands grabbed his wrists, and he asked in surprise, “Angela?”
Her yell forced him to open his eyes, and a scream of shock and horror was torn from his mouth. Angela was running towards him. She wasn’t the one holding onto his wrists. Pete wasn’t even sure what gripped him. The creature was short and stout, clad in worn, ill-fitting clothes. Its skin was a mottled gray, with spots of dark green, and its head was squat and nearly shaped like a football. It grinned happily at him. Its teeth were disturbingly black and sharp, and there were far too many of them. Hands, which seemed to be far too large for its body, gripped Pete’s wrists, and off to the left he saw a small section of the hallway, the dark corner, was open. A small passage extended beyond the wall, the lathing and horsehair plaster were visible.
Several other creatures similar to the first crowded the entrance, watching everything intently. Then the creature began to drag Pete towards the small doorway.
As Pete struggled to free himself from the strange thing’s monstrously strong grip, Angela reached them. She paused, only for a moment, before she aimed a kick at the creature’s back, her sneaker landing squarely and loudly. The beast let out a shriek and dropped Pete, turning quickly to Angela. Yet even as it did so, she kicked out again, hitting it in the face and sending it sprawling backward.
Shrieks arose from the creatures watching from the doorway, and they came rushing out. They swarmed over Angela, bringing her crashing to the floor. More raced from the passage to grab hold of Pete.
Angela’s screams shocked him. His own cries joined hers as hundreds of teeth found his flesh. Pete started to shriek as his clothes were stripped off his body and the hideous things began to eat them. His throat felt as though it would burst from the force of his screams. A hand gripped his right ear and tore it from his head while sharp teeth severed tendons and shredded muscle. Again Pete tried to twist away, but his head was held firm. As he opened his mouth to scream once more, a small hand darted into his mouth and ripped out his tongue.
As Pete and Angela were slowly devoured alive, the camera remained on its tripod, silently recording the gruesome and bloody feast.
