“Really? I didn’t think she would come.” Her face perked up a little bit.
“Of course, she came Opi. It’s you’re tenth birthday. Double digits. It’s a very big deal.”
She smiled at me and I knew that she was anxious to see Nicole. There was a bond there that made no sense but spanned through all space and time. I knew that there was nothing that I could do about the disappointment she would feel later. We all knew it was coming, even Ophelia as well.
I watched her scamper off and I was filled with a mix of emotions. It was good to see her happy, but some days, most days, I wished that Ophelia was mine. She deserved a good mother, all children did. I would have done my best and then she would have rushed at me in the same way.
My hand fell to my burgeoning stomach and I knew that I was going to get a chance. I also knew though, that Ophelia was always going to hold a special place in my heart.
“What are you thinking about?”
I smiled up at Alex. He had snuck in behind me at the landing and wrapped me in his arms when I saw him. He was always there when I needed him and at the moment, I wanted to feel his reassuring warmth against me.
“Why?”
“You have the sweetest look on your face. With the belly, it’s just picturesque.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”’
“Just thinking about our family getting bigger. I can’t wait for it, but at the same time, I’m trying to cherish these moments as much as I can. I know that in a few months, our lives are going to change dramatically. It will never be just us three again, you know?”
“Are you getting sentimental again?”
I brushed a tear from my cheek and tried to hide the red that was going to my face. I hated when it did that. It was like my own body was denying me what I wanted. Now there was so much that needed to be said, but I just couldn’t get it out. That was the worst thing of all.
“Yes, I guess I am.”
He pulled me towards him and I was thankful that he didn’t mention all of the hormones that were running through me. I knew that I was a little more delicate now, as he liked to call it, but that didn’t mean that I wanted to be this way and I certainly didn’t want it brought to my attention.
“It will be okay. You haven’t lost her.”
He didn’t have a clue, but I was just going to go with it. His arms were around me and that was all that mattered. Our little family was everything and the man next to me had become my whole world. It was going to be okay, better than okay.
It was going to be the stuff of dreams.
