God of Magic 7 Page 29

“I suspect you know why I’m here,” she sighed as she held out a finger to Artho. He instantly grabbed it in his own tiny fist without ever waking up.

“The new god,” I replied quietly. “You said only the new god could use the Shodra.”

“I did,” she agreed. “You could join the pantheon, become the God of Magic.”

Of course I was tempted. Who wouldn’t be? I had felt the promise of the Shodra, and a small part of me tingled at the idea of holding that kind of power again. To know that I could shape not only this world, but many worlds in whatever way I wanted, was more enticing than any offer I had ever received.

It would have been easy to say yes, but as I held my firstborn in my arms, I knew there was something else I wanted to do even more. I wanted to raise my children, to see the people they would become.

“Maybe one day,” I told the Goddess of Luck, “but on one condition.”

  “Oh?” Theira smiled at me.

“I don’t want you to step down,” I said. “I want to rule with you, and I want you to give me children, just like my other wives have.”

The goddess paused for a moment, and then a smile slowly spread across her face.

“I never thought anyone would ask that of me,” she admitted. “I had always hoped someone would.”

“I am asking you now,” I laughed.

“Now, now?” She raised an eyebrow.

“When I’m done here,” I said as I gestured to the room. “Don’t gods live forever?”

“We do,” she laughed. “So there is time, and yes, I will give you children. As many as you want.”

  “I want a lot,” I laughed.

“I will hold you to that, Gabriel Vega,” she said, and then she was gone, in a soft silver light.

Someday, when I’m older, and my children have all had their children, I’ll take the goddess up on the deal, rule beside her, and give her the children that I knew she had always wanted.

  The end.
