“You told me your mother’s name was Alyssa, right?” she asked him.

“Aye,” he said, fascinated by his new daughter and playing with her tiny hand. “It was.”

“My mother’s name was Annabelle,” she told him.

“I know,” he said. “You’ve told me.”

“How about Alyssa Fiona Fraser and Annabelle Edith Fraser?” she asked.

“I like it,” he said. “But which is which?”

“I don’t know,” she said and giggled.

“Can we come in?” asked Hamish from the door. “We’d like to know if we have granddaughters, grandsons or one of each.”

Jacqueline was afraid at first, afraid she was going to disappoint her Da as she told him, “they’re both girls.”

“Granddaughters,” he said beaming, turning and slapping Caiden on the back, “we have granddaughters.”

“Can I hold her, son?” Caiden asked Connor. “Have you given them names yet?”

As the babe at her breast fell asleep Jacqueline covered herself and handed the second baby to her own Da telling him, “I’d like you to meet Annabelle Edith Fraser, and her sister Alyssa Fiona Fraser.”

The two Grandda’s beamed at each other, “I love it,” Hamish told his daughter. “Your mother is smiling down on you from above today.”

“Can we come in?” called Jacqueline’s brothers from the door. “We won’t stay long, just long enough to meet our nieces and make sure our sister’s well.”

“Come in,” Jacqueline told them. “Meet Alyssa and Anabelle. Named after their two grandmothers in heaven.”

“Everyone out now,” Connor said to the group admiring the new babies, “my wife is tired and needs her rest.”

As the family left, Connor climbed onto the bed with his wife and new daughters, pulling his wife back into his arms as the babies laid sleeping next to her.

“You’re the best thing that ever happened in my life,” Connor said to her as she began to doze.

“Even though our marriage started as a mistake?” she asked him.

“An honest mistake,” he said to her, “and the best mistake I’ve ever made.”
