The Wayward Star Page 29

by Jenn Stark

I sighed. “It’s going to get worse, then. More dangerous.”

He tilted his head, his eyes dark and intent on me. “More dangerous, yes. But worse? I don’t think so. When there is hope, even the hope found by following a wayward star, there is light. Too many Connecteds have lived without the benefit of that light for too long. For them, the danger is well worth it. Because you will fight for them. We will fight for them. As the sword of the Council, I have a great deal more freedom. A freedom I’m looking forward to exploring with you. For the first time, Miss Wilde, we will fight together.”

He settled back in his chair, and his expression shifted slightly, his gaze at once intimate and…something else too. Happy, I realized, and my heart tugged sharply at the thought. The Magician of the Arcana Council was happy.

And as I recently had been reminded, being happy mattered.

“And we’ll win, right? I don’t want to know the odds—I beg you, don’t tell me the odds. But, if we’re together, we will win?”

He leaned forward and reached across the table, and I lifted my hand to his. His grasp was warm, sensual, and positively shimmering with magic.

“If we’re together, Miss Wilde, the game will never be the same again.”

  Acknowledgments

THE WAYWARD STAR was so much fun to write, particularly since I got to explore what Sara might be thinking when faced with challenges as diverse as old friends turned enemies and high school reunions. Thank you to all my readers for continuing to read my books, which allows me to write these stories for you. I remain truly grateful to Elizabeth Bemis for her beautiful work on my books and my site—especially my gorgeous series covers. My editorial team of Linda Ingmanson and Toni Lee continue their tireless efforts on my behalf as well. Any mistakes in the manuscript are so completely my own. Thank you to Edeena Cross, Judi Soderberg and Sabra Harp for their insightful, careful beta reads, and to Kristine Krantz, who will need a new set of bouncing balls, since I keep losing them. And, of course, thank you, Geoffrey, who made suggestions long ago that I finally incorporated into this book. It’s been a Wilde ride.
