But when I saw the simple gold band with its single drop-shaped diamond and heard my father’s explanation about the ring’s symbolism—a way to rekindle with the past for a merrier future—I made my decision.
Will Ellie like it too?
Ellie slowly raises her chin, and her eyes meet mine. Her mouth opens then closes.
I smile at her and nod. “This is what you think it is. I know it’s soon, but it’s also late. If I’m honest, I wanted to ask you to become my wife the day I saw you run across the field after the Cougars’ game.”
Ellie is still staring at me, speechless.
I jump up and kneel beside her chair, putting my arms on her lap and cupping her hands with my own. “It’s my grandmother’s ring, but if you don’t like it, we can change it. Also, we can wait for the actual wedding, as much as you want. I know you just got the promotion, so I don’t want to pressure you—”
This time it’s Ellie’s hand that flies to my lips. “Shhh, would you let me answer first, before jumping into our wedding plans?”
My innards contract.
Could she want to say no?
Ellie captures my gaze, then tilts her head and smiles. “Yes, and once again, yes. I want to marry you, Wyatt. And this ring’s beautiful. Absolutely perfect.”
A grin spreads on my face. “It is, isn’t it?”
She nods while sliding her fingers behind my nape. She pulls her forehead close to mine. “I love you,” she whispers.
“And I love you,” I murmur, then hold out my hand to her. “Would you allow me the honor?”
She gives me the ring, and I slip it on her finger. Thanks to Cora and Hope’s help, the resizing turned out a success. The golden band sits flawlessly on Ellie’s skin.
She admires her hand, then gazes back at me. “I can’t believe this is real. It’s just…”
“I know.” I understand exactly what she means.
I reach up to Ellie’s neck and drag her close to me. Our lips melt together into what I can only describe as the Super Bowl kiss of all kisses.
As the world slows around us, my mind accelerates, throwing at me fragments from my past—painful, joyful, victorious, and challenging experiences, all leading me to this moment. For the first time, I see sense in them. In every single one of them.
My bliss with Ellie might seem almost unreal, as if conjured by a spell, to anyone on the outside. But I know it isn’t. It’s the happiness we’ve achieved through forgiveness and change. That’s why I know it’s not a flash in the pan delight. No, it’s a lasting one—because Ellie and I belong together, and we’ll stay that way for the rest of our lives.
