Sandcastle for Pegasus Page 29

by Bob Avey

“We have much to discuss, Martin. But I can see now is not a good time. I’ll try to be brief. During our conversation when you were stuck somewhere between 2014 and the time tunnel, our connection began to break up, but not before you gave me the name of Doctor Stewart, a traveler Andrew and I had been looking for. I paid Stewart a visit. As it turned out, it wasn’t at all necessary. You accomplished the mission flawlessly. For now, everything is back as it should be. Well done, my old friend.”

“Thanks, but I’m not sure I like the for now part. It sounds open ended.”

“Very astute of you to pick up on that. We were surprised by the recent anomaly, never thought it would happen again, but it did. And who’s to say another Doctor Stewart won’t pop up somewhere. You have a rare talent, Martin, perhaps even unique. Andrew is quite interested in you.”

“If it’s anything like what I’ve been through, no thanks. And who is Andrew?”

John Rainbow said nothing. He simply tipped his hat then walked away.

Tanner had kept quiet during Martin’s and John Rainbow’s conversation, but his eyes now looked as wide as the headlight on his Harley. “What was that all about?”

“Everything is back the way it should be,” Martin said. “Perhaps we should just leave it at that.”

Tanner shook his head. “Not a chance, Martin. A man dressed like someone’s fancy butler shows up, talking about you and time travel like it was as ordinary as a walk in the park, and you expect me to pop open a beer, if I had one, and just forget about it. And that thing about not going back, Candy keeps saying that too. Chris and Jennifer just blow it off. Like I said, Candy has a tendency to ramble. But there’s more to it than that, isn’t there? You and I taking that ride to the cemetery was real. Candy was gone, Martin. And you did something that brought her back. You’re not going to walk out of here like nothing ever happened. I want an explanation. You owe me that much.”

“It’s a long and complicated story, my friend.”

“I reckon we have a few hours.”

“Yeah,” Martin said, “I reckon we do.”
