They spent the next hour eating barbecue and then birthday cake and talking and laughing with their friends. But every few minutes, Tyler would look over and catch Becky’s eyes, and they would smile.
Shane didn’t stay long. He had to take a flight to Kansas City for the game on Sunday. But everyone felt blessed that he’d stopped in for Becky’s birthday party, and everyone was still buzzing about this strange thing that happened when Tyler told the football hero that he was taking away his girl. No one could quite understand that one.
Finally Tyler and Becky managed to slip away. They walked down a dark and silent Main Street, arm in arm and whispering together.
“I love you, Tyler,” she said so often it was beginning to sound like a chant. “You know what? You are a solid rock of a man. I need someone like you to keep me steady. Don’t you see the way I fly off the handle, either crushed by developments or unreasonably excited? I need someone like you to keep me on an even keel. I need someone who’ll be there for me, like you were tonight.”
“I love you too, Becky. And I need the same from you.”
She looked up into his face, her own eyes shining in the moonlight. “Will you go with me?” she asked softly.
He didn’t ask where. He didn’t ask how. All he said was, “Anywhere. Any time. Anyway you want me.”
She sighed and snuggled happily against him. “Tyler Carrington, this just might work out.”
