Turning around, I was confronted by the ghoul. She said, “Well how do you expect to prove your claims with no evidence to support them?”

“I don’t. You’re the one making all the claims. Frankly, I’d rather you buggered off and left me and my family alone.”

That aggravated her. She marched into the living room, collected my holdall and thrust it at me, then shoved me out of the door. That’s when I heard the ringing. It had to be David at the other end. I pushed her back, making my excuses, and ran to the telephone. Trying desperately to think of a coded message to give to him, I picked up the receiver.

“You are not thinking of leaving the country are you, my lord?” Oh, Christ. It was Anthony Knight. “That would be a highly regrettable mistake. Tell that gorgon in your house that you have a better offer elsewhere that comes with its own level of protection. A suite in the MoD bunker has already been assigned to you and your family upon completion. Say the word, and a security team will be dispatched immediately. What’s it going to be, my lord? A seat in power or destitution and grief?”

I was struck dumb. Lady charity was glaring and edging closer to hear the conversation. I opened my mouth, but could not form any words.

  “Tick-tock, my lord…”
