“I did. Go on and take care of your horses, I’ll go make sure everything is done.” Heidi smiled as she watched them disappear into the barn together.
Satisfied and glad they were home, she went to check the stove, pulling out some of the leftovers from the day before and adding it to the mix. Ethan and Eddie came into the mudroom and she could hear them cleaning up a bit before they came in to eat. It made her happy to see them getting along so well; it was everything she hoped. Soon enough they were all sitting down to eat. “Ethan was right,” said Eddie, “Some of the fences had been washed away. We took care of it.”

Eddie smiled and looked at the two of them. “Thanks,” he said, squeezing Heidi’s hand under the table. “And dinner is delicious. I hope it wasn’t too bad, being here by yourself last night.”
“Naw. I was starting to get a bit worried this afternoon, but I knew you two would be fine.”
“If I’m going to be longer than a day or two, I’ll always, tell you,” promised Ethan. “And you know I’ll take care of Eddie here. And he’ll take care of me.”
“Thanks,” said Eddie again, and went back to eating big bites of his food.
After supper they all settled in the living room to watch television. Heidi leaned against Eddie as Ethan channel surfed and drank a beer. She noticed they shared a look, but neither of them spoke. After a while Eddie yawned and announced he was going to take a hot shower and go to bed.
“I’ll go with you,” said Heidi. They shared a look again, but nothing was said as they headed upstairs.
While Eddie took a shower, Heidi lay in bed with a book, waiting for him to finish so they other shoe could drop. There didn’t seem to be anything wrong, but clearly something was up.
Finally the shower shut off and Eddie appeared a few minutes later, freshly shaven and with a towel around his waist.

Heidi lay awake for a while. She could hear Ethan go to bed not long after Eddie started snoring. Well, this would make the next few days interesting at least; to see how things changed after they all shared a bed. It was exciting.

The next day Heidi got them breakfast like usual and they headed out for their rounds. “Cowboy’s work is never done,” smiled Eddie with a wink.

“Was last night okay?” she asked, watching him.

Heidi laughed. “You’re the last one up, you make breakfast.”
“Long as you left me some coffee.” Eddie leaned in to kiss her and went to fix something.
Ethan watched them. “You two really are great together.”
“Well, I’m okay with you being part of it too. Last night doesn’t have to be a one night only thing, as far as I’m concerned.” Heidi sipped her coffee.
“All three of us can discuss it, but I wouldn’t be opposed. I’m glad I hired Eddie. This wasn’t what I planned when I told him it was fine to bring you along, but I’m certainly not complaining.”
“As long as you keep those paychecks coming,” teased Heidi.
“They paychecks will keep coming as long as you keep those excellent dinners coming. I’ve been eating better the last few weeks than I have in probably months.”
“Sounds like a deal to me,” said Heidi.
Eddie came back in a few moments with plates for everyone and sat next to Heidi, giving her another kiss. “What’s the plan for today?” he asked Ethan.
Heidi listened as they talked about what needed to happen next out on the ranch and what animals needed tending, what projects needed completing. It seemed like years since they’d come up the drive, nowhere near the length it actually had been. Already she couldn’t imagine any other life than this, and she luckily, she didn’t have to.
The ranch was home. Eddie and Ethan were home. They’d all take care of each other and that was the way it should be. She gathered the dirty dishes and went to wash up, already anticipating the next time the three of them might find their way to bed together.
