  • Make sure you can set aside time each day for your dog. Create a family chart for doggy care duties.

  • Dog-proof your home: for example, tuck electrical cords out of the way and make sure small toys and poisonous chemicals and plants are out of reach.

  • The adult pets at the shelter can be a perfect choice—their sizes and personalities are fully developed, and most are already housebroken!

  • Teach your dog good manners. The teaching process will bring you closer together, and a well-behaved pet will make you both happier!
