“What the hell…?”
I crouched down to the ground for a closer inspection of the mysterious object. The candle light was dim but I managed to decipher one word etched in white lettering at the top of the projectile’s body. It read ‘Grenade.’
“Oh, shit,” I hissed, and felt my stomach and throat knot in a gripping fear.
The grenade lay at my feet and before I could move, I witnessed a blinding flash of light and a loud rushing sound in my ears. I was thrown across the bar room, as though I’d been punched by ten heavyweight boxers at the same moment.
I landed hard on the floor on my back, with a loud ringing in my ears and a numb sensation throughout my body. I stared up towards the ceiling, my vision blurred amid a cloud of choking smoke, wondering whether I was going to live or die. My alternative self stood over me and crouched down, a few inches from my face.
“See you on the other side,” he mouthed. He might have spoken but I could only hear the shrill ringing sound pulsing through my head.
I blinked a few times. My vision blurred completely out of focus, and then everything went black.
