He gazed out from under his hooded lids at Crane on the depot boardwalk and then across the street to where the miners had emerged on to the stoop of Regan’s Place.
‘Dug enough holes for one day,’ he said evenly. ‘That’s for whoever buries him.’
‘That all you got to say?’ the uniformed Crane growled.
‘What else is there, feller?’
‘A whole lot, mister. If you wanted. But you ain’t the talkin’ kind, are you?’
Edge looked again across the street to where the group of miners stood silently out front of Regan’s Place. And answered: ‘Not the only one it seems. Appears the art of conversation is as dead as he is. Yet it ain’t happened yet.’
‘What ain’t happened?’ Crane asked sourly.
Edge heeled his horse forward and looked from the dead old timer to the sun-bright sky. Said: Telly vision.’
