Kate caught him gazing at her. “Did I thank you for saving me?” she whispered.
But he wondered this: Who had saved whom?
Epilogue
Ten months later
Kate took a deep breath.
The past few months had been a maelstrom. While the legalities of the disasters Daniel and Paula Priestly had set in motion might take years to settle, Kate felt her part was just about over. All that remained of her first marriage was her boys’ trusts, and those were being taken care of by a nice, impartial law firm. She, herself, wanted nothing from her late husband’s estate or from her former father-in-law.
What she wanted was now in her grasp. It didn’t escape her knowledge that everything that had happened to her had led to the present moment. There was no denying that not all paths to the future were landscaped thoroughfares. Hers had been unpaved, bumpy, painful, but she had survived.
She heard the music start and her pulse raced.
This was the beginning.
Billington in November was chilly, but the inside of Aunt Beatrice’s house was warm and comforting, just as it had been the first time she stepped foot in it so many months before. She smoothed the silk skirt of her wedding gown and took a step.
Kate walked alone between the rows of chairs set up in the large living room, even though her father and brother had flown in from Oregon for the ceremony. She didn’t want anyone giving her away. She’d belonged to the man she was about to marry since the first moment he caught her in his arms. The last few months had cemented their feelings for each other. She was already his; this was a formality.
And there he was, Billington’s new chief of police, gazing at her, the smile on his face reflected in his eyes. Her Mac. Strong, vulnerable, hers. She felt her heart flutter as she looked at him. His big hands rested on the top of two blonde heads. Harry and Charlie, adorable in little black tuxedoes, leaned back against Mac’s legs, totally at ease though their wide eyes hinted at an underlying excitement.
After all, they’d been promised cake.
“Mommy!”
Harry broke free and ran down the aisle toward Kate. She caught his hand just as Charlie joined them, so in the end, she didn’t walk down the aisle alone, instead she was escorted by her two small sons.
Mac’s smile grew even broader as Kate reached his side, and she felt her love for him consume her heart.
This was the beginning.
