“I would never do such a thing,” Olivia said with a grin. “May I?”
“Por supuesto,” Alessandro said, patting the bed at his side. “Your brother is missing you. He told me so himself before he fell asleep.”
“Babies cannot talk, Papa,” the girl said, rolling her eyes at Alessandro’s whimsy.
But the twinkle in her eyes told another tale entirely.
“You do not have Ashes in your pocket, do you?” Catriona asked next, for the special mouse-sized pockets Olivia had convinced Sadler to sew into her gowns had led to a series of surprises, not all of them the welcome variety.
“Johnstone is watching her for me,” Olivia reassured her. “Mice do not like babies, you know.”
“I did know that,” Alessandro said, giving their daughter a wink. “Ashes told me.”
“Papa!” Olivia exclaimed.
But then she started to laugh. And then so, too, did Catriona and Alessandro.
It was a moment—the rare and precious sort of moment in life—that seemed too wonderful to be real. Catriona gazed upon her beloved family, her heart so full, it ached.
“Do you want to know what else the mouse told me, mija?” Alessandro asked Olivia.
She rolled her eyes again, still smiling, “Qué?”
“That I am the luckiest man in all the world.”
