“What do you mean?”
“We know Danny thought it was a game, but Steven was obsessed with the game,” Landon said. “Danny never really gave you a good reason for why Steven assumed he was responsible.”
“Danny said that you guys mentioned something that tipped off Steven.”
“And that’s entirely possible, but there is one part of the story I’m still trying to wrap my head around.” Landon pinned me with a serious look. “As part of the investigation we went through Steven’s finances. One of the charges was for a sun catcher from Call of the Wild.”
I stilled, my stomach churning as reality set in. “So he put the sun catcher in my office.”
“That’s the assumption,” Landon confirmed. “Now, he either did that because he had a crush on you and thought you’d like it or he did it because he was working with Danny all along and they both wanted to claim you for the game.”
“But … I wasn’t playing the game at that point. Technically I was never playing the game, but Aunt Tillie wasn’t even playing the game then. She didn’t start until later that night.”
“That’s a point I hadn’t considered.” Landon rubbed his hand over his chin. “I don’t know what to tell you. I thought it was possible they were working together, but now I’m not sure we’ll ever truly know.
“They’re both dead, your ghosts are gone and we’re light on physical evidence,” he continued. “We’ve impounded the car Steven stole, but I don’t think we’ll find evidence inside. He was too terrified of his father to transport a dead body in his father’s vehicle.”
I didn’t know what to make of any of it. “So that’s basically it?”
“It is,” Landon agreed. “Chuck finished hacking the system after the fact and confirmed everything we already knew. He’s proud of himself, and the only reason I’m happy is because it means we have outside corroboration.
“As for the developers, they suddenly want to talk to us, but in exchange for us agreeing not to press charges,” he continued. “We told them we don’t have that authority, that’s the prosecutor’s deal, and they clammed up and hid behind another lawyer.”
“What do you think will happen?”
“I think the parents of the victims will sue them and shut down the game.”
I couldn’t decide if I was happy about that. I knew a couple of witches who wouldn’t be. “Well, I guess we can’t dwell on it.” I hopped to my feet and strode to the middle of the room. “Let’s finish measuring and then go to the home improvement store. Wow, there’s something I never thought I’d be excited about.”
Landon barked out a laugh. “Think of this as the first day of you really being the boss. How will you remember it?”
“You’re going to take me out to dinner after we go shopping to make the day really special.”
“I think I can be persuaded to do that.”
“Then you’re going to massage me for a whole hour.”
“I can probably be persuaded to do that, too.”
“Then you’re going to let me boss you around.” I was getting more and more enthusiastic. “I’m going to make you rub my feet and stuff.”
Landon merely shook his head. “You’re going to milk this boss stuff, aren’t you?”
“For the rest of our lives.”
Landon’s smile softened. “I can live with that, too.”
   I knew we both could.

   About the Author
I want to thank everyone who takes the time to read my novels. I have a particular brand of humor that isn’t for everyone – and I know that.
If you liked the book, please take a few minutes and leave a review. An independent author does it all on their own, and the reviews are helpful. I understand that my characters aren’t for everyone, though. There’s a lot of snark and sarcasm in my world – and I know some people don’t like that.
Special thanks go out to Heidi Bitsoli and Phil VanHulle for correcting the (numerous) errors that creep into a work of fiction.
If you’re interested in my future works, follow me on Facebook, Twitter or join my mailing list. I do not believe in spam. I only announce new releases or free promotions.
This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, places, events and incidents are either the products of the author’s imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.
