Ryker’s injury had been a flesh wound, so he hadn’t spent any time in the hospital. Although he still had a bandage around his middle. That shot had been meant for her, and Mia was sure that she wouldn’t have fared as well if it had hit its mark.
Mia’s right arm was in a cast, and she looked at the signatures scribbled all over it with fondness. Holding her left hand, Ryker led her out to the kid’s swing set, where she took a seat. He took the one next to her and swung in a slow motion.
James had been brought back, so his sister could handle the burial and funeral. Eddie seemed to have recovered, and proudly told his tale of how brave he’d been with the bad guys. Mia could attest to that.
The board had delivered the decision to implement Mia’s software program. The process was moving forward rapidly, and remedial students had access to it over the summer. Iris and Griffen were managing the company, while Mia took a few weeks off.
The media exploded with news of Mia’s abduction. The tale was told repeatedly with many embellishments, though the real story was riveting enough. Mia still couldn’t believe that she’d survived. The fans were in a frenzy, and she was touched by all the support.
The threat was gone, and Mia had a chance to recover. It would take a while to heal, mentally and physically. Ryker had been with her every second, attentive and caring. She loved him more than she thought possible.
Ryker stopped swinging and came over to stand in front of her. He pulled Mia up and wrapped his arms around her. She looked into his loving eyes. “You’ve made my heart whole again,” he said, then touched her cheek.
Mia couldn’t begin to tell him what he meant to her.
Ryker kissed her gently then said, “Let me love and protect you. That’s my greatest desire.”
“I love you with all my heart,” Mia said, “and I think I’ve proven that I certainly need protecting.”
Then Ryker pulled a tiny box from his pocket and opened it. A diamond engagement ring sparkled in the sunlight. “Marry me,” Ryker said, then dropped to one knee. “I promise to honor your love.”
Mia choked up. She hadn’t had a family, or a man she could trust. Her heart swelled with joy and a tear rolled down her cheek. “Yes…yes, I’ll marry you.”
Ryker stood and put the ring on her finger. Then he kissed her deeply, before looking into her eyes.
“With one condition,” Mia said.
“You name it.”
“For our honeymoon, we don’t go to Europe, especially not the Pyrenees.”
“That I can do.” Ryker lifted her hand and kissed the diamond on her finger. Then he pulled her close for a passionate kiss.
