‘If required? Now that does sound encouraging.’
‘I would prefer it, though, if I wasn’t completely alone next time.’
Johnny beamed. ‘Anyone in mind?’
Acknowledgements
My sincere thanks to Mr George Watson, of Thurso with whom I sat talking on several occasions discussing Caithness as it was during World War II. My thanks also to Angela Lewis for her kind assistance and to all the ladies at Dunnet and Canisbay Kirks.
My thanks also to my friend and editor, Janet Laurence and to Ian Hooper of Leschenault Press and Bronwyn Wood of Brand House.
My special thanks go to Peter for his unfailing support and enthusiasm as well as his company on my many missions to remote places no matter the weather or hour.
Author’s Note
The historical event that inspired If Necessary Alone was an attack on the 22nd February, 1941 by a German fighter on the lighthouse on Stroma Island in Pentland Firth, a body of water off the northern coast of Caithness. The attack caused no damage and no one was injured. It was one of two similar attacks on lighthouses in north Scotland that happened on the same day and for which there appears to be no obvious reason.
