Ryn pulls back and gazes at Kari again.
“You look gorgeous, Kari! God, I’m so happy!”
“You’ve never looked more beautiful, ma. You’re radiant.” Kari says in wonder.
“Thank you, Kare Bear.”
Kari chokes on a sob at hearing the nickname.
“I’m so so sorry, ma. I was so terrible to you. I see that now.”
“It’s okay. All is forgiven. You’re here now, and that’s all that matters.”
Kari nods her head, unable to speak.
Taryn grasps her hand and pulls her over to Amalie and me.
“Kari, you remember Etienne.”
“Of course. It’s wonderful to see you again. Thank you so much for taking care of my mom.” She says politely, though I can tell she is unsure of how I feel about her.
I pull her into my arms and squeeze her tightly. Her shoulders shake with emotion. She pulls back and laughs as she wipes self-consciously at her eyes.
“You look handsome as ever, of course. But I swear I’m over it.” She jokes to clear the air and we all laugh.
“Kari, this is your sister, Amalie.”
The fact that it never crosses Ryn’s mind to say ‘stepsister’ is just another reason I love her so much.
“I know. She’s the one who contacted me and told me to listen to the audiobook.”
Ryn gazes at Amalie in shock.
“You did this?”
“Of course.” She shrugs just like a twenty-year-old. “I love you, mama. And I want you to be happy.”
Taryn’s eyes fill with tears again.
“I am happy. I’m so happy, I don’t even know what to do with all of it.” She clutches her hands to her heart.
She grasps the girls in each arm and pulls them towards her. I smile at them and swallow around the knot in my own throat. One of Ryn’s hands reaches out and clutches my shirt pulling me into the group hug.
I laugh and wrap my arms around them, resting my cheek against Taryn’s curls.
Taryn in the center. The rock that supports our foundation. The center of our everything.

Twyla Turner currently resides in Arizona. She was born and raised in Joliet, Illinois, a Midwest girl at heart, though constantly moving from place to place, and always thinking of where she wants to go next. Having been an avid romance novel reader since junior high and minoring in Creative Writing.
