Lyra threw herself in my arms, and I lifted her up, nuzzling her cheek before kissing it gently. She was Kamala’s spitting image if not for my eyes and hair color.
“Where’s your mother?” I asked while approaching the Dervhen twins.
“She took Cyrus to the fresher. He needed to pee.”
I chuckled at the way she wrinkled her nose. Whenever her little brother felt he wasn’t getting enough attention, he’d lure his mother or me away, often using the pit stop as an excuse. Our clever little girl was onto him.
“But it’s okay,” Lyra said with a shrug. “I had a vision today.”
“You did?” I asked, my curiosity piqued. “What was it?”
“I can’t tell you! We are on Veredia,” she chastised, pretending to be the adult. “We don’t try to control the future; we just live to see what happens.”
“You sound like your mother,” I mumbled.
“No,” Lyra said, shaking her head with such energy her golden locks bounced around her face. “That was from Uncle Eryon.”
He smiled as I glared at him. Then, touching his palm to his heart, he took his leave and went to join Rhaella with whom he had rekindled a peaceful happiness.
Moments later, Kamala joined us carrying our son. I wrapped an arm around her waist, and she leaned into me to receive a kiss.
“I can’t believe he’s still going,” she whispered, staring at Vahleryon in awe.
“I do,” Lyra said with conviction. “He’ll be doing all of that for real someday.”
“He will?” Kamala asked.
“Yes. I’ve seen it.”
Lyra gasped just as the words left her lips, then cast a guilty look towards Eryon, having revealed the vision he’d told her to keep secret.
“It’s okay,” I said in a conspiratorial tone. “We won’t tell anyone.”
“I will,” Cyrus said teasingly, before wiggling out of his mother’s arms.
“I’m going to get you!” Lyra said, slipping out of my arms to race after her little brother.
It was a short race which ended up in her tickling him into promising to remain quiet.
“Don’t worry,” Kamala said in a soothing voice, having sensed my sliver of concern through our empathic bond. “Whatever the future holds, we will overcome it together. Do you see how they all look at him? He is an unstoppable machine with a heart of gold. They don’t fear him; they love him. I’m not afraid because what we’ve built here, what we’ve achieved with these children, together, is magical. Come what may, we will be on the right side of history.”
“Come what may, we will be ready,” I said, pulling her into my embrace. “I love you, my mate.”
“And I love you, Korlethean.”
