I reflected on how the case had turned out and felt pride that Tony was now sitting in prison and would be for a long time. A long list of convictions meant that he’d serve at least 30 years before he could even ask for parole. He wasn’t going to be a threat to Tina or any of us now. And I was being promoted. The partners had heard about my work with Tina in Florida and had been impressed. A higher salary, more perks, and a better job. Not bad.
I was smiling as my phone rang.
“Hello, this is Melanie?” I answered, the smile still in my voice.
“Hey, Mel, it’s Amber! Did you get the email?” She sounded distracted.
“Oh yes, I’ve started making arrangements already.”
“Oh good. You know those sticky handprints I was telling you about? Well, it seems like there’s going to be more in about seven months.” Amber announced in a flat tone. Then she shrieked in joy.
“That’s wonderful news! I’m going to be an aunty again!”
“You are and soon Aunty Tina will be home as well. We can be our old family again!”
Well, maybe not our old family, we’d all changed so much over the months, but we were all going to be together again, and that was more important than anything else. We were there for each other, through thick and thin. Nothing was ever going to change that.
