In fact, I almost wanted him to know every little detail. Maybe it would goad him to come after me. Maybe, in doing so, I’d finally get to kill the bastard.
Maybe I’d fulfill the promise I gave Heather before we went on the run.
But for right now, waking up with her next to me on a Saturday late morning was a pretty good deal.
She was still asleep when I got up and headed out into the rest of the clubhouse. To my surprise, most of the club had cleared out. Petey sat at a table, texting on his phone, and a couple of the prospects were on the couch, but they were in uniform for King’s Repairs, presumably on break from their shift.
“Can’t believe everyone cleared out,” I said as I walked over to Petey.
“Are you kidding? Do you know what time it is?”
He showed me on his phone that it was after one in the afternoon. Even by biker standards, that was late—and it said a hell of a lot for the amount of stress Heather had gone through that she was still sleeping with me.
“Shit,” I grumbled. “My bad. How are you doing?”
“Me?” he said with a laugh. “I feel fucking great having gotten back into battle. It’s been a minute. I’m a little sore, but I’ll take being sore for what we accomplished.”
“You can say that again,” I said.
He offered me his glass of water, which I quickly took and gulped down. I wasn’t hungover, but a glass of refreshing water in the morning went a long way.
“Sure am glad you got your girl,” he said. “You’re lucky it worked out for you that way. I don’t know where the hell my high school sweetheart is, but it sure isn’t in Romara. She’s probably in some big city or something.”
“Trust me, I know how lucky I am,” I said. “Especially considering how badly I fucked it up.”
Petey chuckled in a knowing way, like he knew well what I was talking about.
“What?” I said, a smirk forming on my face. “Did you get yourself a girl too?”
He shrugged.
“I wouldn’t exactly say got myself a girl,” he said. “But let’s just say that I’ve got my eye on someone. And I think she might just have her eye on me.”
I laughed.
“Well, good thing for you, us bikers know how to get girls,” I said. “Just be careful. You might start a trend of getting everyone hitched.”
“Me? Never. The young kids will never settle down.”
“That’s what I thought just a week and a half ago,” I said.
Funny how quickly it can change.
But how nice it is to have someone like Heather in my life once more.
