“Is turning you in to the elders the only way to curtail your reckless behavior?”
Isolaund Farr gasped and spun around at her brother’s angry voice. Her battle cats growled, baring their teeth. She quickly sent a telepathic signal preventing them from attacking him. “Don’t sneak up on me like that. I might not be able to stop them from ripping you to shreds next time.” She tossed back the deep hood on her dark green cloak and pulled off her gloves.
“You’ve been to the surface again.”
She didn’t deny it. What was the point, this passage only led one place and that was topside. “The intruders ignored my warning. It’s obvious they have no intention of leaving. We’ll have to drive them off.”
He made an impatient sound and fell into step beside her as she headed back toward her chambers. “It’s forbidden to go above. You could end up in a stone cell if you don’t stop obsessing over those fools. The guiding council knows about them and is deliberating on a plan.”
“All they ever do is deliberate.” She spat out the word with a snarl and tossed back her long silver hair. “I prefer action, decisive action.”
“You really want to start a war?” he sounded incredulous. “Why not just share the planet with them. We’ve done so before.”
“And that worked out so well for our grandparents,” she snapped. “They were hunted to the verge of extinction and barely escaped Earth with their lives.” She faced him, fists planted on her hips. “The females are human! Do you still want to share our world with them?”
He tensed, his arguments dissolving beneath the power of her righteous indignation. “You can’t take them on all by yourself.”
She laughed harshly and lengthened her strides. “Watch me!”
