Save Me
Page 23
The clean sheets and my freshly showered body lifted my spirit for a while, so much that I started to feel better about myself. The tears had ceased for the moment, and I felt like I would eat something delicious. I got off the bed and went to the kitchen to see what I could find. I was starving because I had not eaten since Friday when Shannon left me, and I had nothing but coffee. I was shaking from hunger, so I took from the fridge a container of short ribs and garlic string beans that Claire had prepared. There was also pecan salad, and I put that on a separate plate while the other I prepared was being heated in the microwave.
I could not wait for it to be hot enough because I needed something in my stomach. I ate like a wild animal as the food seemed to be disappearing into a hole. I would love to just concentrate on the food I was eating but flashes of Shannon kept popping up in my mind. I thought of my parents and how devastated they would be when they learned that Shannon was no longer in our lives. They would be so heartbroken. My dad called a few times but I did not accept nor returned his calls. It was not unusual though because it was my habit to not accept calls from them on weekends. If I needed to see them, I would pay them a visit.
My phone began to ring and I almost broke my legs to get to it because I was certain it was Shannon. But it was not. It was Lynn. She was my personal assistant so there were no days that were off-limits for her, so I took the call.
“Hi, Lynn,” I answered brightly, hoping she would not hear the effects of my two days of weeping.
“Miss Todd, may I come up. I need to see you urgently.”
“Is everything Ok?” I asked and hoped that she was not coming to tell me she was resigning. That would be too much for me.
“May I come up?”
“Y-yes. Of course,” I said and disconnected the call then called security to send her up.
I scraped the rest of my food into the garbage can because I could not eat anything else. I was too worried about what Lynn had to say. I stood by the door impatiently waiting for her, and I opened it at the first sound.
“Lynn,” I said as she came with a gift box with a beautiful bow on it.
“Miss Todd, I was asked to deliver this to you and I can’t say anything else,” she handed it to me.
“Who told you to…”
“I’m really sorry, Miss Todd. I can’t say anything. I have to go,” Lynn said and stepped out of the apartment and closed the door behind her.
I was very confused about this delivery and Lyn acting so weird, so I placed the gift on the table and quickly removed the bow. I opened the box and I gasped. There was a beautiful yellow and white baby onesie with matching boots and hat. There was a note attached.
For our baby.
There was a plane ticket for tonight at eight, and there was a letter. I quickly opened it.
My dearest love, my heart is so heavy and my body shivers at the thought of how much I adore you. I have found what I had been looking for my whole life, and there is nothing I want more than to spend each moment with you. How stupid of me to reject the family that would complete us, that would demonstrate just how much I am committed to this amazing life we have in store for us. I want us to have a baby. I want you to be as happy as you have made me. I have taken the journey that you took; the one that gave you the strength to put your past behind you and look to a better and brighter future. I am here seeking that same strength and making that same resolution you did. I have done this to show you that I am as serious about this new life as you are. Come to me, my love. My arms are here wide open waiting for you.
Love you forever, Shannon Todd.
I threw the letter in the air and jumped like a child on Christmas morning.
“Yeeeeeees!” I cried out.
I took the baby’s clothes that were so cute and hugged them to my body. My two days of sorrow had turned to incomparable joy. I could not contain myself because Shannon’s words had tattooed themselves on my heart and in my mind. We were going to have a baby...we were going to be a family and there was nothing that could excite me more. It was amazing how one’s whole life could be dramatically changed in an instant. My parents had no grandchildren, their only child had no partner, she had no interest in running the family business, she was unmarried, and the list went on. Then I found myself in the middle of Shannon and Raj’s marriage and our world would change forever. My parents would get all they dreamed of, and I would find my soulmate.
Shannon was where it all started for me. She was where I found my strength. We would restart our journey together and there would be no looking back this time.
“I’m coming to you, my darling,” I said, and rushed into my room to pack.
There was a permanent smile on my face and an overwhelming joy inside me. Shannon was waiting for me at the same hotel, in the same room where my life started, and I knew Lynn had to have pulled out all the stops to make this happen for Shannon. I wondered if my dad had anything to do with it because he too was acting weird and calling me on weekends which he never did in years. There was a private jet waiting to take me to Shannon and somehow I felt like my dad had a hand in it.
Whatever the case may be, I would get to see my baby. I got dressed and started pacing the floor, looking at the clock every minute as I waited to be picked up. I was losing my mind with impatience, but I was still so very happy, and when the call came that my ride was here, I grabbed my suitcase and my handbag and ran. I almost screamed from the excitement and butterflies that had taken me over because there was nowhere in the world I wanted to be more than by Shannon’s side.
Five hours of flying did nothing to dampen the joy I felt since I opened that box, but I used the time to reflect on my life and how it was before I met Shannon. Her love saved me and gave me purpose. She gave me life, and she gave me a family. We were going to have a baby, and he or she would be the most loved baby in the entire world because that little angel is not even conceived, yet I could feel him laying against my chest. I could smell his face as I kissed it and rocked him to sleep. I wiped the tears away as the overwhelming feeling of happiness and hope came over me. I quickly wiped my eyes because the driver was glancing at me in the rearview mirror and might be confused as to why I was smiling one moment and crying the next.
It was so surreal when I walked into the lobby of the hotel where I had come to put my thoughts together. At that time, I was running away from Shannon and my feelings for her, now she was a few floors up from where I was, and now she actually belonged to me. It’s strange how life works because we can’t see into the future, but when we look at the present and compare it to the past, we could see how all the random pieces fit themselves together.
I was escorted up to my room and my legs buckled beneath me a few times because I could not contain myself. My heart was bursting with love, my body was shivering with passion and excitement to see the love of my life. I gave the porter a tip, opened the door, and wheeled my suitcase inside, wearing the same smile I left home with. I noticed there were rose petals leading to the bedroom of the hotel room I was so familiar with. I held my heart and followed the trail. When I entered the bedroom, it was nothing short of a love palace. Hundreds of red roses adorned the room, champagne chilling beside the bed, and on the bed was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen.
“Baby…,” I whispered.
Shannon was naked and had on a huge smile, but the smile disappeared, and she started to cry. I rushed to her side and took her naked body into my arms. She was trying to talk but she was overcome with emotions, so I hushed her as I rocked her. She pulled away from me as she continued to sob, then reached for a box inside the night table. She took out the most beautiful diamond ring I had ever seen and slipped it onto my finger. My mouth flew open in surprise and it was my turn to lose my voice. My tears joined hers and they did the talking for me. Shannon pulled me into her arms this time, and she rocked me. Then she whispered in my ear:
“Thank you for saving me.”
