Falling in Paris (Encounters #3) Page 19

by Fifi Flowers

His last letter was dated two years ago. He was sorry. He hoped that my life had not been too bad. He hoped that I had forgiven him for causing me so much pain, and for losing my family. He had learned from my aunt while on a visit to Paris that I was happy and was not working as a prostitute. That made him feel a little better. He wished things had turned out a different way. Then, he included information that made me happy and sad at the same time. He had married and his wife was about to have their first child. He said he wished it was with me. I did, too. He also said that he would love me until he took his last breath. I would love him, too.

Thanking Genevieve for bringing me the letters. I read them over and over the next few days. Then, I wrote everything down—using a small travel journal I had been given years ago by my Aunt Helena—from the time I met Simon until these words I write now. Then I wrote this letter to Simon.

  My Dearest Simon

Thank you so much for contacting me. I wish I had received your letters years ago. I am writing to you, though, you will never receive this. This is for my own peace of mind and to draw closed a chapter from my old life. I have written down all of the wonderful times spent together and I am turning them over to Genevieve, along with this journal. I know she will keep them safe. Though, I treasure your words, I cannot bear to keep your letters in my possession. They are too painful. I have tucked them inside a copy of your book that I stole from my father before he sent me away. I refused to let him have something you wrote so beautifully about us. Genevieve kept it safely in her possession for years, and she will continue to do so for us. I wish things would’ve turned out differently, too. How often had I wished that you had gifted me with a child? Had I known how brief our time together would be, had I known that you would have taken your own life, as I was told—I’m glad to hear you did not—I would have welcomed your seed into my womb. As fate would have it, that wasn’t meant to be. I am happy for you and your wife and your child. Even if I am a bit jealous of her. Maybe you have more by now. I, too, am married. His name is Henri Capet. He is a good man. He helped me like myself again. We have two boys. I love them so much. I love my husband. I am happy. Please do not blame yourself anymore. Be happy. Live your life to the fullest. Goodbye.

  My love always,

  Your Colette

I hope you enjoyed reading Romancing the Cobblestone…

I imagine you have figured out that Colette is Émile’s great-grandmother, mother of his beloved grandfather. And that Simon is a distant cousin to Avril. Perhaps they were destined to end up happily together.
