“You did good, Hrefna.” She smiled. “Better than I thought. In the state you were in, I didn’t have much hope in you.”

I snorted and crossed my arms over my chest. “It didn’t seem like it. You hounded me so much.”

“Nonetheless, you completed what I’d come to do. Now it is my time to go.”

My head snapped in her direction. “What?”

“I must give Lana back her body. It is only fair, Hrefna,” she said stoically.

“But you have it for a year. Stay!” I said it almost desperately so. I didn’t know why this bothered me so much. It wasn’t like I liked the hag.

Verdandi shook her head and sighed. “It is not right if I selfishly live in Lana’s body just because I’m not ready to die. I’ll be back. My sisters and I will be reborn. I will see you again, Hrefna, have no fear.” She grinned. “I only wanted to tell you before I left.”

I bit the corner of my lip, contemplating my next move. Then I rolled my eyes. “Dammit, come here,” I said and pulled her in a hug. “If you tell anyone we did this, I’ll kill you.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.” She laughed as she patted me on the back.

  “Thank you, Verdandi,” I muttered.

  “Thank you, Hrefna.”

We walked inside the cemetery and discovered it was packed. Tons of people showed up to Charlie’s funeral, and I couldn’t be happier. She was loved. How couldn’t she be? She was such a pure soul.

I found Will in the front with Fen, and I squeezed my way through to them. They saved me a seat in the middle between them, and I sat down, waiting for it to start.

“Everything okay?” Fen asked, grabbing my hand.

“Yeah, everything’s going to be fine.”

He stared at me so deeply; it was as if he were looking into my soul, and it made me look away, self-conscious. Fen tucked my hair behind my ear and kissed my cheek softly.

“Everything will be fine because you’re free, Raven. You’re finally free.”

I tilted my head to the side and thought about it. I was free—free of alcohol and drugs, free of Odin, free of the demand of being a valkyrie. I was just free to be whoever the hell I wanted to be.

  “I’m free.”
