The Winter Trap Page 9

“Go easy on the help,” she said, flashing another smile as I frowned. “You’ll find out.”

I stopped at the door, catching my reflection in the glass, wondering if it was a good idea. I had looked better and the panda eyes were a whole new look for me. I took a breath, opened the door and stepped inside, startling the teenager with the vacuum cleaner in reception.

“Uuko?” I said, as he stared at me, mouth open, eyes bulging.

I caught the beginnings of a smile on my lips, together with the classic you should see the other guy, but I kept both in check and went looking for Tiillat.

  “Constable?”

“Yes,” I said, with a nod at Uuko still standing in the middle of reception. “Is he…”

“Voluntary service,” Tiillat said. “He’s doing fine. But what about you?” She took my arm. “Can I get you anything?”

“No. I’m fine. But I’d like to see Kiiki, if I may?”

  “You found Venus Manumina?”

  “Yes,” I said. “I did.”

Tiillat stepped back to study my face, then nodded. “She won’t confuse you with anyone today. Come on.”

I followed Tiillat into the common room, just a few paces behind her, slowing as she bent down to talk to Kiiki. I took a breath, wondering if this was the smartest thing to do, considering Kiiki’s age, and the distress I had caused on our last meeting. But if it was Atii who went missing, I would want to know, no matter how difficult it might be.

“She’s ready,” Tiillat said, beckoning me forward.

I sat down in the seat beside Kiiki, took her hand, and smiled.

  “Tell me,” she said.

Your words make all the difference

Honest reviews of my books help other readers find them. As an independent author I don’t have the backing of a publisher or a team of publicists, but I do have one thing going for me, and that’s a group of engaged readers.

If you enjoyed this book I would be very grateful if you could spend just five minutes leaving a review (as short as you like) on the book’s Amazon page.

I have written a lot of stories set in Scandinavia and the Arctic. Many of them are interconnected with characters making guest appearances across the different series.

If you’d like to try more of my stories please consider signing-up for my newsletter, and downloading a free copy of Piteraq. It’s the prequel to my adrenaline-fueled Greenland Trilogy.

I look forward to telling you more about Greenland and the Arctic regions that I have fallen in love with.

  About the Author

Christoffer Petersen is the author’s pen name. He lives in Denmark. Chris started writing stories about Greenland while teaching in Qaanaaq, the largest village in the very north of Greenland – the population peaked at 600 during the two years he lived there. Chris spent a total of seven years in Greenland, teaching in remote communities and at the Police Academy in the capital of Nuuk.

Chris continues to be inspired by the vast icy wilderness of the Arctic and his books have a common setting in the region, with a Scandinavian influence. He has also watched enough Bourne movies to no longer be surprised by the plot, but not enough to get bored.
