She stopped dead. She stared down at the brooch her mother had given her so long ago. “Mom, is that you,” she whispered, so even Beau couldn’t hear.
She shook her head. This was crazy. She was just overwhelmed was all. They continued making their way outside.
They stood in the entrance momentarily and let everyone pass them. It was tradition for the bride and groom to go out last.
Vern was the first to approach them. “Welcome to the family, honey,” he said, and emotion threatened to overtake Simone. She reached forward and hugged her new father-in-law.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
Vern stepped back, and everyone began to throw rice at them. Simone wriggled as it slid down her back.
Something touched her on the nose. She brushed it away.
She felt it again. She brushed it away again. She wondered if she had a spider on her face. Then she looked up, and around her.
It was snowing! It was her wedding day and it was snowing.
She wondered if this was the sign she’d prayed for. And then she knew – her parents were here watching over her and her new husband.
* * *
The wedding reception was held in the dining room.
Vern had decided to fly in a catering company after all. Mrs Simpson was practically part of the family, and he wanted her to enjoy the day.
She’d been there on the ranch since Beau was a little tacker and would want to see him married.
Amy sat alone on one of the tables, waiting for the reception to begin as the caterers worked in the background. She was tired after all the photographs they’d had to pose for. People were arriving in the dining room in dribs and drabs, and she was one of the few people there.
“Well hello there.”
She turned to see one of the groomsmen standing above her. He was one of Beau’s brothers if she was correct.
She extended her hand to him. “Hey. I’m Amy, Simone’s friend.”
“And I am Hank,” he said. I’m one of Beau’s brothers.” He held onto her hand. “Would you care to dance?” He bowed theatrically, and Amy laughed.
“There’s no music.”
“I can fix that. Don’t go anywhere.” He sprinted to the back of the room and flicked a switch. Instant music.
He came back and stood in front of her again. “Now would you care to dance, Madam?” He took her hands and led her to the dance floor.
As his arms went up around her, Amy knew she was lost. She suddenly understood why Simone loved it out here.
