They bonded us together, though, in a strange way. The four of us were forever connected, not just through their love of me and my love for them, but by our shared traumas.
It wasn’t ideal, and it wasn’t romantic, but it was something that held us together tighter than glue.
Later in the day, I felt like I had to say something to my three boyfriends.
We were lounging in my room, each of us busy with our own activities but aware of each other’s presence. I was on my comfy chair with Whitt on the floor near my feet. I was reading, and he was typing on his laptop.
Barrett was stretched across my bed, taking notes in his Biology textbook, and Rome was at my desk working on his English paper.
It was nothing that stood out; it was much like any other day.
But it was the first time I felt like I had to say it. I had to speak the words out loud. They bubbled in my chest and floated up through my throat until I could no longer keep them inside.
“I love you. Each one of you. I love you so much it hurts at times, but I love you.”
One by one, they turned to me and smiled.
And one by one, they replied, “I love you too.”
And with that, we went back to our tasks. Our lives.
Living.
With love and contentment and the big, bright future laid out before us.
After everything we’d been through, nothing could stop us.
