This change wound up being really difficult. A number of plot elements had to be adjusted for it to make sense, and while describing the transformation was fun, conveying the emotions in such an intense scene was a real challenge for me as a writer. I rewrote it many, many times, trying different approaches until I settled on one that satisfied me. I hope all my work paid off for the reader!
Were there any ideas you had for this story that didn’t work?
When I first started playing with this concept, I experimented with a lot of different approaches. One thing I originally considered was making the Jekyll/Hyde division more metaphorical. I thought maybe I’d write about a character who seemed like two different people because he was on drugs, or was using a fake identity online, or some more realistic premise like that. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that approach would sacrifice the essential strangeness that makes this story riveting.
We all know that in real life, sometimes people act different in different situations, to the point where someone familiar can feel like a stranger. Even in Stevenson’s day, this wasn’t a revolutionary idea. What makes the story compelling is taking this commonplace idea and making it literal. When we say someone has a “split personality” or he “seems like two different people,” we’re generally being metaphorical. But what if we weren’t? What if they really became two entirely different people?
Removing this element from the story would have made it boring and ordinary, when I wanted it to feel weird and unsettling.
Discussion Questions
Jek thinks he’s a nice guy. Do you agree?
Why do people in the book find Hyde appealing? Do you?
Lulu starts out hating Hyde, but gradually her feelings about him become more complicated. What changed her mind?
“It’s not my perversions that shock and appall people. It’s their own.” What do you think of Hyde’s revelation that he only does what other people want? Did it change the way you felt about Hyde? About the other people in town?
The story ends with Jek sacrificing himself to get rid of Hyde. Could this ending have been avoided? What would the characters have had to do differently? What different decisions might they have made at various points in the book?
At the end, Lulu is thinking about creating her own “Hyde.” What do you think that person would be like? What would your “Hyde” be like?
What story would you want to update? How would you do it? What would have to change?
