Choices of the Heart Page 33

by Margaret Gay Malone

When they rose to leave, the old priest was crestfallen. “I have just found my family, only to have you leave.”

“We’ll be back tomorrow,” Vittorio said. “We’ll take a drive through the countryside, have dinner together. It’s been a long time since you saved a little boy from falling into the Arno, and we have a lot more to talk about.”

Kitty watched the two men at the door, both tall and slim, the son strong in his prime yet remarkably like his father. And in their eyes, the same look of peace, a gift they had given to each other.

The old priest watched from the doorway as they walked down the road—the warm young woman whom he’d liked immediately and who was his daughter-in-law, and the beautiful boy and girl exuberant and full of life as they walked next to Dermot. Miraculously, they were his grandchildren. And the man…his son! Now in his old age, after years of service and penance and loneliness, he was filled with a sweetness that he had felt long ago.

It was Ottavia, and her love still lived.

  A word from the author…

About My Addiction: I confess. I’m an addict. When I’m writing…Happiness. When I’m not…Misery. I can’t even count all my ideas, finished and unfinished. My office has more loaded shelves than Costco.

I started writing children’s books about the things I love—animals, music and history. Still following my heart, I’m writing adult books, this one inspired by an event in my family.

I’m retired from a dual career, teaching and public relations. A native New Yorker, I live on Long Island with my husband, Tom, and rescue cockapoo, Daisy. My daughter and two grandchildren live nearby.
