“What? In cases we’re close to fifty-fifty.” He shrugged.

“The argument. Love. Fathers. At least I know you’ll never walk out on our kids.” She wiggled on his lap, hoping to change the subject back in the direction of the bed.

“I’d never leave you. I don’t care if some of your family wants to give me a hard time. I think you used that as an excuse to keep me away because I wasn’t like all the other bad men of whatever color in your life. I won’t let you down.” He nuzzled her neck and went lower to tease her breasts.

“Good. Maybe you’re right about using it as an excuse. It’s not a lie though. Some of the family will not like the idea. Mom loves you so that’ll shut up most of the fuss. Now take me to that bed and show me what you’ve got before we get into another deep conversation about the world or our lives. Never met a man who liked to talk as much as you do.” She nipped at his sexy shoulder.

“I only talk like that with you. You wouldn’t let me do anything else, so I took what I could get. Now I’m addicted.” He sprinted for the bed and deposited her in the pile of pillows.

Landing on top of her, he kissed her senseless. She needed his passion. Nothing else existed but them.

  Chapter Six

Kissing along her shoulder, he pressed her into the pillows. He nuzzled her breasts while her fingers circled his growing cock. How quickly the dynamic between them had changed. It felt as natural and easy as he’d hoped. Until she started to laugh. She tried to hold it in, but her body trembled with it.

  “Did I do something funny?”

She shook her head and ran her hand over his chin. “A little five o’clock shadow in the sensitive spots. It tickles.”

“Really?” He moved down farther and rubbed his cheeks along her inner thighs until she gasped.

She smacked his shoulder and grabbed him by the hair, dragging him back up then kissed him hard and reached for a condom, handily set out on the nightstand. His cock stood ready to go and he took the protection from her hand. However, he had to be sure of her first. Reaching down, he rubbed her clit and played with her.

“You are the biggest tease!” She bit his lower lip.

She demanded attention, but he’d waited so long he wouldn’t rush it. Sliding on the protection, he settled between her legs, and when she lifted to him, he groaned. She’d come first even if it drove him mad. Filling her slowly, he gave in to the passion. Her bucking hips encouraged him, but he needed no urging.

Her hips met his as he fucked her. When her legs locked around his waist, his brain clicked off and his lust took over completely. Her moans pushed him faster while his tongue tangled with hers. She scratched his back and squeezed him tightly, deep inside her.

Reaching between them, he tormented her clit a little more while he withdrew and filled her again. Her gasps pushed him closer but he held on. She moaned and one more stroke on her clit sent her over. He loved her screams of satisfaction and how she held him like a treasure.

Thrusting into her one last time, he savored that she still quaked in relief. Her tremors sent him into climax so fast he saw spots. He buried his face in her neck and moaned as the release pounded pleasure to every nerve ending.

  “Monica,” he whispered.

She kissed his forehead and cheeks. “Yes?”

“This doesn’t change work. I want to see you every day. Not just at home. We’re good together.” He couldn’t believe he’d just said that. Great timing!

She pressed a finger to his lips. “Family law is less about winning and more about the best compromise. But we have to disclose our relationship to our clients so they can decide.”

He nodded. “Fine, but we should point out that we’re focused on what’s best for the kids and are good at working together.”

“Okay, just don’t think because you’re great in bed that I’m going to give in every day at work, looking at you across the table.” She gave him a quick kiss.

That ego stroke did the trick. He pinned her and tangled his tongue with hers. “We’re good. Now you just have to tell your mom.”

“Don’t think this’ll all be easy. Mom likes you, but I’ve got a few cousins who think dating a white guy is dancing with the devil.” She studied his face for a reaction.

He shrugged. “If we can’t handle a few jealous people, we’re pretty weak. I’d love a home-cooked meal, and your mom invited me.”

“Gourmet wasn’t good enough?” She looked over at the minor remains of the fancy spread.

“It’s wonderful, but the whole over-the-top thing isn’t really us.” The suite screamed epic luxury, but it felt more like a dream instead of the reality they wanted.

“You’re right. When do we get kicked out of the big suite?”

“We’ve got the conference at eight, so we’ll have to be out before then. Back in our rooms to change and all that. I can’t believe we have to sit through seminars all day tomorrow.” He nibbled her ear. “I’ll be sexting you, by the way.”

“We have to go to the meetings.” She sighed and looked at the clock on the nightstand.

“I didn’t say we wouldn’t go. Are you thinking of playing hooky, counselor? I’m shocked and disappointed.” He faked a look of stern disapproval.

“Never, but maybe we can skip the luncheon and have a private bite?” She pushed him and he dutifully rolled over. “Right now, I think we should go back to my room.”

“The judge paid for all this luxury.” Jeff had no desire to put on clothes or move.

She slid off the bed and hunted down her teddy and green dress. Slipping into both, she tucked her undergarments in her purse. When she stepped into her shoes, she gave him an expectant look. He’d never say no to her.

In no time, he had his pants and shirt on. He found his shoes and made sure he had everything. Once they got off the elevator, he gave her a quick kiss and went for his room. Consolidating their things seemed logical.

She checked her appearance. A normal room made it true somehow. This was a place they could afford, and as long as he was naked, she’d enjoy it every bit as much as a fancy suite. She added a dab of perfume just in case all of their sexual activity had worn off her favorite scent. Stripping down to just the teddy, she wanted to look sexy for him.

The knock at the door triggered a sexual rush for her. She opened it and saw a bunch of roses in front of him. She grabbed them and pulled him into the room. Tossing the roses on the bed, she wanted him continuously and claimed his mouth.

“You didn’t have to get me flowers.” She yanked his clothes off as he dropped his suitcase next to the dresser.

“They were in the suite. Madame Eve thought of everything.” He nudged her back on the bed and dropped a few condoms on the nightstand. “We’ll need those as well.”

“Oh, the roses are so beautiful. You’re a romantic.” She inhaled.

“Those fancy, thornless roses might be out of my price range, but we’ll enjoy them now. You’re much more beautiful, but I’m going to do the boyfriend stuff right.” He pinned her beneath him and tugged the teddy up until he tossed it to the floor.

She gave in to the affection and let the smell of roses take over until her needs demanded him. Taking charge, she rolled him onto his back and straddled his hips. His hard cock between her thighs aroused her deeply. She rubbed her pussy against him and met her halfway with his erection. She couldn’t believe she’d resisted him for so long. He’d exceeded her dreams in every way.

He cupped her breasts and studied her shamelessly. “I think we’ll both be very sleep deprived tomorrow.”

“No, we have to be professionals. Especially if we’re going to be a couple. That’s enough for people to talk about.” Her cheeks burned at the idea of everyone knowing. Not out of shame, but she’d worked so hard to be independent and it abashed her to realize how much she needed him.

“Then you better get to work and make it count.” His hands slid down to her hips and squeezed.

  She grabbed protect
ion and slid it on his erection. Kissing his lips, she eased down on his cock until she had every inch of him. His hips snapped up, and she grinned against his chin. For the first time in her life, she felt loved by a man.

They found their rhythm and came together. When he tried to roll her, she pressed him to the bed and sped her hips as pleasure vibrated through her. He relented and took what control he could. Eager fingers rubbed her clit while others pinched her nipples.

She held on until his teasing tongue in her mouth broke her self-control. The orgasm set her free, and she rode him hard as she kissed him. Muscled arms coiled around her and held her tight. He rolled her over—she didn’t fight him this time—and he filled her again and again. Finally, he said her name and pressed his face to her neck. His grunts made her melt, as he trembled inside her. Watching his orgasm brought her closer to him than she imagined possible. The man was totally vulnerable. They didn’t just love or lust after each other. They liked each other.

Holding him, she slowly caught her breath. Stroking his back, she rubbed her fingers into his skin, as his powerful muscles tightened. Men loved to show off. Then he relaxed under her touch, as if he trusted her enough to let his guard down. He’d never been so at ease. She had never noticed he always kept his guard up a little until then. Nothing separated them now.

“You knew from the beginning. The first time we met, didn’t you?”

He lifted his head and smiled. “I never take the easy route either. You’re stubborn but very worth it.”

“Damn right. So are you. Now let’s get some sleep,” she said.

“Okay, but plan some sex into your morning routine.” He yawned.

  Epilogue

  Three months later

Jeff dipped Monica on the dance floor at another fundraiser for the charity whose event started their Vegas trip. He’d won over Moni’s mom without much trouble since he’d laid the groundwork well. Her sister and niece were harder, but they were coming around. The dance proved to be the final test. A lot of work people they didn’t see all the time were here.

“No one seems shocked.” Monica said.

“Why would they be? No one in either of our offices said a word either. It’s like they all expected it.”

“You don’t think they believe were sleeping together before we really started publically dating, do you?” she whispered.

“I don’t care what they thought. You’re mine. End of conversation.”

She frowned. “I don’t want people to think we were ashamed of our relationship.”

Glancing over at Judge Monroe, who easily charmed Monica’s mom over champagne, Jeff knew he’d found the perfect time. Pulling the ring from his pocket, he knelt down in the middle of the dance floor. The music stopped and Monica’s shocked expression gave him the courage to pull it off. He wanted to surprise her and make her happy.

“What are you doing?” she whispered.

“It’s a new dance. Your niece taught me so I could be cool,” he said. “Or you could just agree to marry me, and we can get back to the party.”

“What?” She looked over at her mother.

He got a nod of approval from the older woman and gave her a wink in reply. He’d done it right.

  “Will you marry me, Monica?”

She nodded and held out a trembling hand. He slid the ring on and stood, kissing away her nerves. The room erupted into applause, but he ignored it. She had the final say in his happiness, and her smile reassured him that he hadn’t rushed into the proposal. When she admired the ring and rushed over to show her mother, he knew he’d chosen well.
