About the Author
Gail L. Jenner is the wife of a fourth generation cattle rancher. They live on the original family homestead where history is part of everyday life.
A former history and English teacher, Gail is the author of five regional nonfiction histories (published by Arcadia Publishing and Old American Publishing), and two novels, including the WILLA Award-winning novel, ACROSS THE SWEET GRASS HILLS. Her second novel is a YA historical about the life of Black Bart, California’s most successful stage bandit. One of her nonfiction histories was a finalist in the 2008 Next Generation Awards for Best Regional Nonfiction. An anthology of rural women’s “voices,” including Gail’s, ANKLE HIGH AND KNEE DEEP, will be released in the spring 2014 by Globe Pequot Publishing.
Gail writes for NPR/Jefferson Public Radio’s historical series “As It Was,” and for Jefferson Backroads, a regional publication. She appeared in 2011 on History Channel’s “How the States Got their Shapes” and on NPR’s “West Coast Live.” She contributed to Huell Howser’s Public TV's special, “California Gold: The State of Jefferson.”
Gail's work has appeared in various magazines, including Better Homes & Gardens, Everyday with Rachael Ray, Country Woman, Range Magazine, Decision, Living with Teenagers, Insight and other regional, educational, and Christian publications. She has contributed to three anthologies by Tyndale, a 5-volume Encyclopedia on Colonial America by M.E. Sharpe, Inc., and co-authored a teacher’s curriculum guidebook for Simon & Schuster.
In addition to the above awards, Gail has placed as a finalist in a number of other writing competitions, including The William Faulkner Literary Short Story Contest, the Jack London Novel Contest, two Writer’s Digest competitions, and several screenplay contests.
Gail and her husband have three married children and seven grandchildren. A gardener and cook, she enjoys cooking for ranch hands, family, and friends. In addition to all of this, she enjoys time on the ranch – working cows on horseback or working as her husband’s sidekick. She is a past president of Siskiyou County CattleWomen and Women Writing the West. She is also a member of Rogue Writers Ink and Western Writers of America. In her spare time, she is a partner in Jenner Family Beef and works as a volunteer librarian, museum curator, and appears as a speaker at local and regional educational and writing workshops.
